Hi guys!


It's been a while since my last post, but I have worked in some proyects. Usually I have to choose how to spend my spare time: either building, modelling or painting or surfing the internet, so as you can understand, I prefer the airbrush rather than the mouse. Sorry!


Well, let me introduce you to Tywinn Lannister, one of the characters from the George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga, or if you prefer TV shows, "Game of Thrones":

The figure comes from a Korean firm called Nuts Planet which have some great busts and I highly recommend this one. As you can see, building it's not a big deal:

However, I prefer to paint the parts separately, because I'm going to use the airbrush and it's an easy way to avoid the tedious masking process.


First of all, some gray and black primer to define shadows and highlights in the head:

Then, I shot some white over the head to get the main lights (sorry I have no picture), and I also applied some colour. Three different tones of brown: From a dark brown mixed with black to a "reddish" one, in order to get some nice tones for the shadows:

Next step: I applied three tones of flesh colour, each one clearer than the previous one are slightly more dilluted:

At this point I thought I had lost some of the shadows, so I shot a very subtle layer of red brown from underneath the figure:

Sorry I had to split the post in two, but let's continue!


I used a medium-gloss varnish to protect the previous layers from the oils I was going to use:

Besides, I think that the varnish give the skin a more natural, "greasy" look.


The oil job was mainly to remark the main shadow areas. First of all a mix of purple and red, very dilluted in turpentine oil around the cheeks:

And also some burnt umber and dark brown around the eyes to give him a more menacing and deeper look.


I couldn't resist and I also painted the lower lip:

two more oil layers and then, returning to the acrylics, I "dry-brushed" desert yellow and clear Navy gray for the beard:

For the hair, I started with the "dry-brush" technique as with the beard: first directly with white, and afterwards, desert yellow and Navy grey. After that, I applied several layers of very dilluted german yellow and burnt umber In the parts where the hair looks darker:

Let's continue:


Once I had the flesh and hair, it was time to give some "life" so I started with the eyes. I painted the "white" part with a very light layer of bone colour. I didn't use pure white, and later I'll explain why:

Then I used a very dilluted wash with red just to imitate the little veins:

I didn´t want him to look like if he had a looooong night out, so afterwards I corrected the marks:

Once I had the schlera, I painted the iris in green:

And the pupilla in black:

With the brown, green and bone colours I just corrected the parts I went "out of the lines" and then, I used the white just to paint a simple spot between the iris and the pupilla. This gives the eye a reflection, makes them look wet and real and gives some life to the look of the miniature:

With the head finished, it's time for the rest of the armour. I wanted to imitate different textures and brights, because as you can see in the series, Tywinn's armour is a rich mix of velvet, bronze, leather and gold. Well, he's the wealthiest man of Westeros, so he has to have a cool nice armour right?


First, black primer:

Then I used tape to mask the bronze and leather parts:

And I sprayed Tamiya grey primer directly to the mantle. This paint it's quite tough, it looks like liquid putty, and I think it would work great to imitate a velvet texture:

Once I had it covered, I used the airbrush again. First, dark red mixed with brown red:

Then, from above, I shot citadel's blood red, which is very bright and impressive:

And finally a subtle layer of red mixed with bone, which produces a "natural" pink, not very "cartoonish" (sorry I can't explain it better):

I have had some busy weeks at work and I couldn't post anything, but finally I have found some time!


For the metals, I really like citadel paints. I think they give a pretty natural look to the metallics.


First, I painted some little details like the straps of the armour:

For the bronze, I mixed an old bronze tone with black and then I applied several thin, very dilluted layers of matt black:

And finally, I highlighted the edges with brass and ancient gold:

Next step: Leather. The armour has some stripes of red brilliant leather, so I had to apply several layers of red gore to cover all the area:

Ok, I'm giving up right now, and never doing another figure on my builds! This is utterly stunning! I can only dream of being able to bring something to life like that!

For the shoulder pad I started with a mixture of bronze and gun metal:
