discussion Vallejo model colour storage

Hi all
I have a question for the hive mind......
I now have a lot of Vallejo model colour paint bottles. They are kep5 in a large lidded box of the right depth. However, I can spend almost as much time looking for colours as using them. As I get out far more than I use, a good session can also cover the bench top...
How do you all store your paints so they can be easily found?

Well for me i put a shelf up next to my desk and put em all on there so easy to find coulour i need

Half on the bench which I use most of the time. The other half which I use every now and again on a shelf behind me

i have some plastic storage boxes......1 for vallejo, 1 for revell, 1 for odds and ends, 1 for weathering stuff, etc etc

keep them stacked in a handy cupboard out of the way, same place as the 'ready' stash

start of each build i take out what i need and put them in a box on the bench....that way i keep the minimum out and dont get the bench cluttered, they have a 'home' on the bench

end of each build everything gets put away, the bench gets a mega tidy up, and i start again with the new build

A drop of the paint on the very top of each bottle would at least allow you to ignore the colours you don't want, leaving just the selection of the particular grey/green/red - or whatever colour you need - from the bottles with those colours.

All my paints, thinners and pigments are stored in colour groups on custom made unit above the spraybooth.

l have these,s one,s and some other shelf's for mr color and so on,
I did buy two costs around $22 each made two last weekend for $5.oo used 3mm MDF,
A saw ,25mm hole-saw ,top strip,35mm x 290mm ,them 3 x 70mm x 290mm,then cut ends,
to steps,

Interesting ideas here....
Paul’s reply is what I currently do. I have boxes of paint, most of which I no longer use....and that’s what I want to move away from...Dave’s idea might help, but I think the paint will quickly wear off of the poly bottles.....
I don’t have room for James and John’s ideas, as that area is where my tools and glues etc. live....
Monica’s idea looks like it might help....I’ll have to look into pre-cut oR home made MDF units. I have both hole saws and wood bit sets I could use.....need to find someone with a pillar drill perhaps....
Any other ideas let me know...

I have Hobbyzone modules for both vallejo and tamiya paints. Very handy and cheap. later on I may post a picture of my workbench

as. you can see the Tamika paint rack is smaller and therefore messier. But since this is a modular set, you can add more racks as you wish. Actually you can design a proper bench unit with all the models available

I have a similar set-up to Marcello and Monica's. This I use for storing most of my acrylic paints.

I have a load of plastic containers from what my late father called "Fairy Roshers". I keep my most frequently used paints ( or the ones I need for the particular kit I'm working on) in these. Labels facing outwards for easy reading.
Easy to store, and scrummy to dive into the original contents!

Ron, you’re spoiling us Mr ambassador.....seriously. Nice idea but I have around a hundred paints now and my waistline won’t support that much chocolate....and...whisper it quietly....I don’t actually like Ferraro rocher.....

If you go with these, then I might suggest filing out the mounting notches a bit for an easier fit of the shelves into the uprights. This reduces the chance of breaking the thinner upright pieces by using too much force to put them together.

Two recommendations makes them worth a serious viewing.....might order tonight...not worried about Tamiya or the occasionally used stuff because I only get them out to spray or for specific effects......it’s the brush paint stuff that needs organising because I use a lot of different colours in quick succession when shading and tinting...

Well, I have ordered the Hobbyzone large rack from the scale models shop, and thrown in a couple of bike kits because I liked the SR 400 build shown on here...

another way is to do it vertical,if you don,t like a stepped rack,that takes up space,on the bench,
and have it ,on a 5mm or 10mm angle leaning back,as a bottle is about ,23mm and a hole saw is 25mm.,
gives that little bit of play,so from front,bit to second ,can be on a fall,then back bit stops them falling out,
just ab idea for you,:smiling:
