All good guesses but all wrong so far I'm afraid.

It's much too early to be giving clues though. (I guess I must have a bit of a sadistic streak in me 'cos I used to write really tough crosswords for "The Times" to get people struggling. I think this is just a newer version of that!)

It IS a crane/hoist as some of you guessed. But it's not part of any ship (or belly button - just to cover all the options you've suggested!).
