Well I certainly didn't expect so many replies to this thread and there are some very interesting answers, about what constitutes a model. It seems that everyone who has replied, agrees with each other, that whatever subject is portrayed as a model and whatever material it is made from and how it is put together, is a true model. So for those (whoever they are) have different views about modelling, then they must be living in cloud cuckoo land.

It is nice to know that whatever interests us, whether it be aircraft, ships, military vehicles, trains, civilian vehicles, sci-fi, or whatever, whether they are built as a diorama or individual, we all enjoy modelling and can share each others interests together, by showing one another our own builds and how we achieve certain results. Yes modelling comes in so many different forms and materials, from the simple models aimed for young children, to the more sophisticated scratch built ships and the like, made from bone by French prisoners of war, during the nineteenth century.

Modelling is an enjoyment we can all learn from, because it is creative and no matter how skilled we are, or complete beginners, we can all learn something on forums like this. and share each others problems and get help too if needed. And to be able to share our finished models and receive praise, makes your efforts well worth while. :) :) :)

Is a model railway a model? Most railway loco's and rolling stock are ready to run straight from the box but they are still considered models.
As is a diecast model. Yes, they are all models.

It doesn't have to be me or even the buyer that assembles a model for it to be a model. What most of us do here is assemble static model kits which is just one aspect of modelling.

Thanks Richard, you've set my mind at rest :)

Cheers

Quite bizarre really. I would think that 99% of model makers try to achieve the authenticity for the real thing in their own model.

Geoff has been accused of not playing the game as he is not glueing his model bike but is bolting the parts together.

I am not aware of any real motor bike stuck together with glue. Think they use nuts and bolts.

I think we are all in agreement that a 'model' is what we individually want it to be, there are no rights or wrongs and we all enjoy doing what we individually like doing.
Sums it up for me.

By the way my heartfelt apologies to Steve, it was a slip of the finger, the Starship Enterprise is of course real, as is the Millenium Falcon, Colonial Vipers and Darth Vader's Tie Fighter.
So is Santa and the Loch Ness Monster!

As long as it is not pre constructed, it is classified as a model- stay on the forum mate-you are welcome

Hi Laurie,

Thank you for your comment. I haven't actually been accused by anyone in particular, just the fact that Si mentioned in my Honda build post, that some people don't consider building these bolt together models as modelling. But it has shown, that the great majority of modellers consider modelling to be anything, if it needs construction or assembling, even if it doesn't need painting to complete the model.

Thank you Freak. I am not going anywhere and will be staying on this forum. You all seem a great bunch of guys and gal (for you Monica) on here and I am happy to stay and see what other people are building and to be able to share my own models with anyone who cares to look in on my posts. I looked at several forums before settling for this one, because there are lots of subjects covered (in other words models of just about everything) and everyone seems very friendly and helpful. I am no newcomer to modelling, just that it has been quite a while since I seriously took up the hobby again.

But what if you build a model then sell it does that stop being a model ?

It is pre built if you buy it

Sorry I just see things differently to most people :D
