So, I'm having a browse around my local model shop. They have the new 1/24 Airfix Typhoon and I'd quite like one. I reckon I can persuade SWMBO that I NEED one and that she should buy it for me for Christmas. Happy days!

Chatting to the guy in the place and he's explaining how well engineered it is and how he has seen it in the flesh and basically it's a work of art in styrene. I start salivating at the prospect, this is going to happen and I'll have one in the stash for next year. (Ready for a 1/24 plane GB maybe;))

Then we get chatting about the older large scale kits...'have you ever built one?' he asks.

'No' I reply 'To be honest I've not built many planes at all. I have just finished the new tool Mk Vb'

I explain. I tell him how great I thought it was, how nice it builds up and how happy I was with the finished result.

'Sounds like you could use something larger scale to practice on.'

'like what?' I ask

'What about trying this?' he answers

Out from under the counter he pulls.

'£25 to you!'

'I'll take it!'

Oldest trick in the book mate , the bloke who runs my LHS is always trying it on but does he win ?...........YES ! :D

Went into our newish model shop several months ago just for a look around, chatted with the staff and talked me into purchasing a Revell 1/72 Schnellboote, cheap because the box was damaged.:oops::oops:

Realised what I had done when I got home and put it on E-bay, made £2.55 profit.

There's always a silver lining. :) :)

It depends on how pally you are with the owner , the one I use I can talk about anything to him not just models so there's a bit of friendship there as well :)

I though about buying that one when Argos had it at £30, but the poor reviews put me off. I'll be interested to see what you think of the kit Jason.

I just wish we had a LMS, nothing really in Ipswich now!!!!

Cheers, Andrew

I am a regular visitor to the place. I am of the opinion that you use it or loose it. I usually buy something when I go in, even if it's just a few paints. The internet has opened up a whole world of aftermarket stuff and kits from different manufacturers that it would never be commercially viable for a LMS to stock. But you can't beat having a browse and opening the boxes.

As for the Spit, I was warned that it wasn't the most sophisticated kit and that is definitely accurate. Lots of flash, lots of ejector pin marks, some sinkage on a few panels and a little warpage to boot. However with some imagination, lots of reference pics, some scratch building and lots of perseverance hopefully I'll bash a decent model out of it. Gonna start it this weekend so build thread will be up soon.

I found that on my hurricane but a bit of superglue here and there sorted out the warps , the flash is a problem with most of these old 1/24 kits

Jason.

Like you, I'm not a plane builder, but the experience of build a 1/24 plane is really an interesting challenge ;)

And after see your skills on the Spit, well, this will be great sure.

There are few threads from Alan. Mobear,...with the Spit 1/24, which is better than the other

I actually think you have got that for a really good price. Yes, it is old and shows it's age and yes, you will need to put a bit more into it than you will a modern kit but you will still be able to make a very pleasing model with it and get a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction out of it. It will also be a great learning tool for when you take on the Typhoon and something to hone you skills and techniques on.

Lol iron willed or what, :D I probably would have been suckered into it as well.
