I always thought that zimmerit was applied to front line tanks/stugs, and not to support spgs etc. I have the Trumpeter 'Ostwind' in my hands & doing a bit of searching, I found this:

The Ostwinds could be built on refurbished Pz.IV hulls, would this zimmerit be a hangover from a previous incarnation? or was the Ostwind treated as a front line vehicle? - if so why wasn't the turret covered.? Not many very clear contemporary photos of the Ostwind around................

It looks like the Ostwind entered service in 1944 so by then then use of Zimmerit had largely been discontinued so I'm guessing this is a repurposed hull

Zimmerit was factory applied from Aug. 43 to Sept. 44 to foil magnetic shaped charge anti-tank mines even though only Germany deployed them. One of those strange things done.

Nice info guys. I never was big on building models with ZIM. It’s just another change outside my comfort zone but I plan on doing it soon.

WWII German armor was built LIFO (last in first out). Upgrades/improvements were done as soon as approved to incorporate, so many older hulls coming in for repair went out with the latest stuff. This led to almost anything goes.
