hi all ive had a sore throat and a cold for about the last fortnight, tried all sorts of pills and potions woke up this morning can hardly talk ache all over throat feels like there is a furnace burning away in it. missus onsisted on phoning the docs. earliest they can see me is next wednesday. which by then i will probably be better or dead, and they wonder why people go to er rather than their docs.

And when you get there they will tell you to take paracetamol !

Unfortunately this is common nationwide I can't get to see my doctor.The receptionist only books appointments for the fourth coming week and all appointments have to be booked on Thursday mornings only from 9 to 9 .30 and if you miss this window of opportunity !!!! then you can't try again to the following Thursday and there's no way they will book an appointment two weeks in advance.Lets face it the country is rapidly being brought to its knees what we used to call Great Britain as long disappeared and now I'm not really surprised by anything in the way of bad public services it's all going in one direction down the pan in my opinion

I had similar, but nowhere near as bad as your dose. Mine went after a couple of days.

I very rarely take anti-biotics, being one of those strange folk who prefer to let the 'old bod' fight whatever it is, all on it's lonesome.

However, what I do do, is drink loads of Vit. C in the form of pure orange juice (Not the concentrate) Probably 1/2pt. a day. It's known that 'sunshine' Vit.C , is the only vitamin that the body can't store, and is good for the immune system. A daily topping up is essential. It works for me, and so far it seems to fend off the worst of the germs.....

There again I could be just lucky. The above is not much use just now Ken, but might be worth trying (Li*l do a cracker in a bottle for 99p)....Now't to loose!

We have a different system where I live , we have to phone between 8,30 and 11 everyday and you have to speak to a Dr you can't just get an appointment and he decides if you need an appointment there is none of this book for next week and sit and wait so this works much better

It regularily gets quoted that it's because of the 'ageing population'....I don't buy that.

Hospitals are getting bad too. Perhaps it has something to do with the huge increase in the U.K.'s population - and I don't mean births either.

You have a point there Ron , I find most old people fitter than younger people , I think it has to do with that mentality of just carry on I'm too busy to bother the docs , I have this mentality I havnt been to the docs in about five years as I know I've got a cold and antibiotics don't work so what's the point

The media don't do us any favours with there eating this will cause this and don't drink or you'll explode at the breakfast table rubbish

yes well you also have to factor in the nhs holidays where members of the eu will book a holiday here and suddenly (surprisingly, I don't think so) fall Ill getting an op or procedure done on the nhs free which would cost them a fortune in their own country

At the first sign of a snivel in any of my grandchildren, it's anti-biotics. The poor winkies have no chance of building up their own immune system.

Good point about the media and eating habits Alan. Trouble is, people swallow (some pun!) all the rubbish about don't eat or drink this and that, and you must eat this and that, bo***cks!

The country has so many 'Lard a**es' queuing up at the Docs and A&E because what they eat, they don't burn off. Nothing does you any harm as long as you eat sensibly....and here's the key to it all....exercise!!!!

In the '60/70's, me and my buddies didn't even realise we had to eat, let alone being told what - we were too busy charging around, having fun!

Yeah, as Alan said, the doc will just ask you to take paracetamol. Sounds like you have a chest/throat infection, so there's only one thing to do, sit it out with lemsip and whisky! Although antibiotics will clear it quicker, I'm deffo of the school that believes in saving that for when you are really ill...

Incompetence too.

One of SWMBO's best friends' husband died two days ago. He went to the GP with an eye problem and was told he had hay fever. He actually had a tumour in his eye, the start of a long road to what eventually killed him. The tumour was finally spotted when he went for an eye test.

Antibiotics will only work if it is a bacterial infection, most cold/flu/sore throat type infections are viral and antibiotics will do no good. Although I would agree with the Whiskey.

I went to the doctors on Dec 29th for the first time in about 5 years to see about having a vasectomy "gulp".... Expecting a 4or 5 month wait... Nope, booked in for January 27th, to bloody efficient if you ask me.

Don't believe them they told me it was a fortnight but I could even raise an eyebrow after a month

Despite all the negative comments about the NHS, there are worse alternatives. My wife and I flew down to Arizona a couple of years ago, and she developed a DVT in her right leg after a couple of days. We'd bought health insurance before we flew, so contacted them and were directed to go immediately to a nearby hospital. The service was great- she was seen immediately and given various tests and drugs. Unfortunately, after 3 days there we received a call from the insurance company declining our claim on a technicality, and we were saddled with an $18,000 hospital bill... Back in Canada we sought legal action against the insurance company but were told it would cost more to fight it. We eventually negotiated with the hospital to halve the fees, but it was still a very expensive vacation.

You all live in one of the most sophisticated societies in the world. Our health is one of the best in the world on average even better than the most wealthy in the world the USA.

My grandfather died at 65. My father in law at 68. My own father at my age. I can expect to live at 76 for another 10 years. Some of you younger ones to near a 100. I am tested regularly for blood, liver kidneys cholesterol and among other prostrate. I am molly coddled.

If you want better all you need do is to tell your MP you want to pay more in taxes or up VAT.

The other side of the world. Sierre Leone. Ebola families decimated children left parent less, Husbands losing their wives and vie versa. Villages decimated. And we moan dear me. What have you given personally ? Well this country more than with Australia than most of the others and in Europe all put together. Nurses and Doctors putting their own life on the line and we moan about having to wait at the doctors or the hospital.

Two Ebola nurses, brave of the brave, return to England with Ebola and they have the finest treatment available in the world. We gave them that as what ever you believe we have one of the finest health systems in the world. Ask about the other nations and they are jealous.

So please let us not moan about the inadequacies praise what the Health Services are doing for us with the money we allocate to them. I mean WE as the government does not have some bottom less pit it is the money we give for them to spend.

I agree as a long term patient of the NHS and a NHS worker, I am proud to say the NHS is among the best in the world. No healthcare system will be perfect but the NHS is something we should be proud of and fight to keep. Even in America the worlds no 1 superpower you have cases of people without insurance who can't afford their medical bills. That would never happen here and that is something I am proud of.

Don't get me wrong I know we have the best health service in the world bar none. It is being run down by bureaucracy too many chiefs and not enough indians, there's 6 managers for this and 7 managers for that and then managers to manage the managers, then there's the pointless number crunching to save money which cost more money to implement than it ever saves, then there's the paperwork which is supposed to save work but actually causes more, oh and we better have a few managers to control that. No we do have the best nurses, doctors and medical staff in the world it's the managers and clerical workers ruining it.
