this genre has gone from strength to strength but I have serious missgivings about the ideas that these stories follow

in both tv and film its portrayed as very quick and the world is destroyed witching weeks without any explanation as to how and very few even mention news reports.

this is a flawed theory

first due to the hours it takes to change once bitten it would be reported of what is happening after a few days , second the governments of the world would be moved to safety probably offshore or too uninhabited islands ,

I do agree that major population centres would fall but the lack of nuclear weapons being used in these areas to stem the tide is overlooked

also there is one big problem with zombies and that is riggamortice after an hour or so they would be unable to move so it would be quickly dealt with

anybody else agree or not

But, something is wrong on a cellular level, hence turning into politicians...er I mean the living dead so, rigor may not set in.

You never know how fast something could spread, most seem to be a virus type that affects living as well as the dead...so only a few seem to be immune.

I thought about that but it's never really mentioned in the movies it could be more like everybody has the virus but you have to die first before you return to being a politician I mean zombie

The rigor thing is never mentioned it's like in that world riggormortice doesn't exist

Although I think Alan has me on 'ignore', I'll still contribute to this one!

The biggest pandemic on record was the 1918 Spanish influenza, which killed 50 million people at a time when the fastest way to travel the globe was by ship.

In 2009 swine flu was the most recent pandemic that got public health officials concerned; first detected in April of that year in Mexico, it turned up in London within a week.

Modern transport means all kinds of viruses can circle the globe in matter of days. With an incubation period & high communicability, something like a zombie virus could infect millions of people before the problem is even noticed.

Most films, books & tv programming has a zombie outbreak in a Western country - what if the virus broke out in a city of extremely high population density like Calcutta?

I believe rigour mortis is not applicable as the virus circumvents the body's natural decay cycle, hence keeping it animated even in death.

If anyone wants what is probably the best zombie story, then read a book called "Feed". Not only is the reason for a worldwide outbreak very convincing, the tale doesn't solve the situation in a few days, weeks or months - it's as much about living with the zombies as they're not going away anytime soon!

I don't have you on ignor at all Patrick I've just been busy to answer everything and have decided not to get into online arguments as it's not going to achieve anything as everyone me included won't change there opinion lol

On your answer I think you've missed my point but I agree with what you say

Point I was making was the speed , in movies it's done all the damage it can in what appears as only a few weeks with something that can take 24 hours to kill that's a long time when you think about the virus not killing you but lying dormant until death or a bite so it wouldn't be so fast

The result would be the same but it could take about 12 months if you take into account how the virus spreads

The rigor answer is probably right but it's never mentioned so I discount it

I recently watched the last ship and they referred to using nukes to wipe out the plague.

Why it was called the last ship I don't know, there was a Russian ship chasing them for over half the series.

As for Zombie's how can they be living and dead? ;)

It's a bit like wrestling is it real or not? :)

This is a bit of a crap answer on my behalf, hope you don't mind Alan.

I love zombies but I still couldn't eat a whole one. I love a good zombie film/game with the resident evil series among my favourites and I'm no longer a big reader but "Feed" has me intrigued Patrick. I'm sure I'd be the very last person to be bitten Alan so I'm not really worried about the incubation time from bite to zombie as I'd be the last man standing. :P I estimate due to the lack of common sense lacking in high numbers of individuals in my town it wouldn't take a handful of zombies very long at all to over run my town. All this makes for good entertainment but in reality it would just never happen as all the zombies would be wasted in hours. I mean my L.P record collection is quite extensive (Shaun of the dead)

What happens to a zombie of it doesn't feed? If everyone is infected then they will have no food source!

i was thinking on a lot of replies to this Zombie thing but I thought the easiest way to say it is this

Man and women vote in politicians, politician creates weapons and then creates nasty weapons so man destroys man and also the world. In doing so he will infect other beings and disease the planet, planet fights back and creates Zombie ( man is over and eventually will be extinct! ) a new asteroid ( overdue

In time the world heals without man

No man no woman no zombie!!

The end

( beam me up Scotty!!!

What I don't understand is, why, in zombie movies and tv series, don't folks just don bike leathers and a full face helmet? This way you could walk around with a penknife, and calmly clean up your neighbourhood! But no, sleeveless vests and shorts seem to be de rigeur!

On a side note, it's pretty pointless applying known incubation science to zombie films, they're bloody zombie films, leave the rules at the door as you enter...

Whatever the reason for the change everyone should be stocking up on chainsaws and other power tools! The only way to kill a zombie is in an amusing way with power tools!

Now this is a very good point , mind you someone somewhere would be up in arms demanding zombie rights :D

Well I'm sticking with the biker leathers and an egg whisk, seriously folks, no human teeth could bite through it, you'd be able to kill them with sarcasm or modern dance routines :D
