    D'uh How stupid am I?

I'm used to making mistakes when building models like not following instructions correctly but I thought in the spirit of openness I would share a few that stand out, I do hope someone posts there's or I am going to look like the stupidest modeller on here !

    1) Alclad Lexan Chrome,,,, this is not as I thought Lexus Chrome !

    2) Gluing the spine section of one particular Ironman on back to front, in my defence the Dragon instructions in them are poor !

    3) Trying to poor a resin mix through a stupidly engineered hole, only to be shown that it has a nozzle that pops out to make pouring much easier!

    4) Adding the tail decals to my first build of a Spitfire backward on one side,,, this is where my forum name of Ade Close Enough comes from

    1) Soaking a Tamiya 1/12th scale motorcycle side fairing in thinners overnight to remove the enamel paint to find it goes all soggy and floppy. I had to buy another kit!

    2) Painting an Airfix 747 white ( when they first came out no less!) and then leaving it out for my Gran to cover in dust when she vacuumed up the lounge.

    3) Holding the deck and hull together on a Tamiya Bismarck with sellotape to ensure perfect alignment and touching the joint with liquid poly only to find when the tape was removed that the glue had seeped under the tape and destroyed all the deck detail!

As an aeroplane builder I have repeated the same mistake, that of forgetting the gun sight, once...or twice.

I've also ignored my own advice, to test an unwanted decal off each sheet with decal softener, and consequently destroyed the decals on the model.

One of my favourites is either opening up holes I should have left alone or forgetting to open up holes I actually need.

      Cheers

        That's not too bad Adrian.

        Mistakes...mmmmmm.

Not really building mistakes but major cock-ups.

Spilling glue all over a just made model and ruining it. This happened with two-part epoxy on another model...you would have thought I would have learned...er...nope.

        Dropping models.

Gluing wrong bits due to me thinking I am a super ace modeler and know-it-all...should have consulted instructions.

        Gluing bits to myself/desk.

        Painting myself/desk.

Throwing parts of a kit away then blame someone else for chucking them

All in all...I be rather useless at this modelling lark.

My latest to date putting a major component of a build in a safe place until later.............I gave up looking for it a few weeks ago I'm kind of hoping it might just randomly turn up when I'm rummaging for something else until then the things on hold.........

I didn't go near a model for this confession - but it counts!

I bought a large bottle of super glue a year ago. I was sat at the kitchen table, a lovely farm house pine one, when I knocked over said bottle, but didn't realise until a few minutes later what I'd done. The stuff was rock hard and as wide as a dinner plate!

It's still there, and when we have guests for drinky poos, we always invite them to 'Have a pick'....no one has succeeded in removing even the slightest speck!

The first time I ever used an airbrush I couldn't understand why the paint was coming out all wishy washy and then I noticed I used airbrush cleaner instead of thinner.

Thinning acrylic with white spirit, gluing the left undercarriage cover to the right wing (cursing the kit for being such a crummy fit) cutting the part to fit then realising, when I tried to fit right cover my mistake. Rigging the titanic funnels and gluing the decks together before attaching the PE which goes around it(still not figured how to sort that yet). Is that enough my list would make 30 or 40 pages.

I have removed masking after painting an aircraft only to look in the canopy and wonder "Where is the &"#¤&/¤&%"" cockpit!!"

It was still on the bench under its protective lid!!!

Not really a cock-up more a disaster, I used the wrong paint cup on an airbrush. Being a large model the cup was rather full. The cup fell out the brush and bounced off the desk. The mess was amazing.

The model only got a few splashes, but my new jeans and the chair and the wood floor took a hammering!

It didn't help that it was enamel either.

There is not enough space on this server for all my mistakes.

But I'll give you some examples.

                      - satin varnish the canopy

                      - adding thinner to the paint over the model = drops of thinner on the already painted parts..

                      - leaving fingerprints on model after checking if paint is dry (that was back in enamel times)

                      - constantly forgetting about dry fitting parts of the other side of the model (when you do one set of something and it works, then you do opposite site without dry fitting)

                      - spilling paint on the floor, trying to airbrush upside down, when using gravity feed an ..

                      And many many more

I think the worst was carefully paring off what I thought was flash on a part only to discover it was detail.

I have also done the fingerprints on the wet enamel paint, decals upside down and forgetting to place the completed cockpit in the fuselage.

Have done that myself, regarding flash...searching and wondering why it doesn't fit and then the penny drops...
