    Food for thought.....Your views please

I'd like your thoughts on this please....

I'm only using the build below to try and illustrate how strange 'Great Build' awards can become.......

Recently Derek posted his excellent KG5 model and received just 5 'Great Build' doodahs.

He then posted that diddy ship and received 6 for something he didn't even make!

His battleship is a stunning example of the modellers art. The work, patience, painting skills, not to mention time and expense were of the highest order - Yet he only received those 5 gongs and precious little comments along the way, and after completion.

I know one shouldn't expect awards as a right, but surely his model deserved more praise than it received.....Unfortunately, that seems to be the 'boaties lot'

Which eventually brings me to the reason for this thread.

Personally I don't like all those 'like', 'great build' thingies and would like to see them removed. We have all seen builds that, sometimes by the builders own admission, were not up to scratch, yet received double figure great builds.

Some models have obviously been rushed, yet still get a fistful of top awards. They are dished out far too frequently, almost as if the giver is just going through the motions, rather than giving a lesser reward, possibly thinking that the builder will check who gave what and see that "The cheapskate only gave me a 'Like'!"........Getting rid of these would prevent any such thoughts by either party.

I would seriously like these things removed and just return to the simple comment, be it praise, helpful tips, indifference, whatever. I understand that folks do like to receive these things, but in my opinion they are over used and as a result have become worthless. I won't be using them anymore, but will return to the written word...Far more friendly anyway!

Please don't 'shout' at me personally, but I would like members constructive general feed back on this.

    Thanks,

    Ron

Problem is Ron, and this has been brought up before, is that the boat section doesn't appear on the new threads list so many get missed.

As for the gongs: I like using them and getting them, although the comments are nicer. If they where not there I don't think I would miss them.

As well as this issue being gone through befor, the suggestion of removing them was hammered Down as a bad idea.

I would be happier if they only showed in the completed sections.

I stil have no idea why the boat section "new posts" shows on some peoples but not on others. As has been said the last five times. All the sections are set up the same way so they sould all work the same way...

My personal opinion is that when I recieve them I'm very grateful but not overly dissapointed if I don't get any.I personally do not have enough time to go through all the build threads and often miss a lot of them.I do give gongs and comments out but not as much as I would like due to the restriction of time.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and as long as the modeller is happy with his/her own efforts then although it's nice to get a gong it's not a major disaster if you don't .Ive seen builds with 10+ gongs and thought why and then others that really deserved 20+ with very few so I dont really take any notice of them.1 mans pigs ear is another mans silk purse. In short I enjoy them while they are here but would not miss them if they disappeared cheers John

If we have to have them at all, then "Confine them to the 'completed' section."......Excellent suggestion Ian' and a perfect solution, one which could keep everyone happy....

I also think the doo dahs are, in a way, counter productive to us learning this noble art....

Joe Soap builds a model and posts the result. He gets 6 'great builds' and 3 'likes'. He's then curious as to why just the 'likes'?....Someone has spotted something that makes the model not quite warrant a 'Great build'. Some people issue 'likes' and then don't post just why....Thus the builder will never know what's been spotted......unless he messages that individual.

Take away the 'gongs' option, and the builder will see in the posts where he could improve. Thus he is helped. In other words (and dare I bring up the old chestnut?) members are a still a bit wary of making comments in a post and perhaps hide behind these awards for fear of upsetting people.....

            Just a thought.

Now home again, so I will have a look to see if we can restrict the gongs, or some of them to certain fora. I'm not sure we can, but I will have a look.

Like you Ron, I feel, an nice as it is to get a gong once in a while, meaningful comments make for a much better reward, or if needed heads up.

Just as a side point. I have removed the great build gongs from the post that Derek made. Its not his build. Its not in a build thread.

I'd much rather see comments than gongs! It shows that someone has taken the time to look & say something useful.

As Ian said,we've been down this road before & accepted the majority vote.

Also,I know from experience that actually saying something can cause unintended offense,so perhaps we'll end up with a forum where no words are said or written& mere symbols will suffice?

I'll throw my two cents in if any one cares. Sure we love to get our little medals but I feel it may lead to bean counting and some inner frustrations among some members. Some may think "my thingy is a lot better than his thingy" and yet his is loaded down with GBs and high praise and I only got some polite passing attention. I kind of reluctantly feel they should be eliminated and people should actually "talk" to one another

Well I'm more cleaver than I thought.

The great build gongs are now only available in the completed sections.

If I have missed one, let me know.....groan.... I have to list them all at once.... so If i have missed one, I will have to do them all again.

                    Whilst on the subject:

Noted: Please use this primarily in "PLEASE READ" threads from the Mods/Admin. That way we do know that we are being paid attention to...

Like: Don't just hit like and then run away. post a comment. Say what you like about it that warranted the thumbs up.

Dislike: Think long and hard before you press. Again make a comment as to what it is that you do not like.

Agree/disagree: The same applies to these. Leave an explanation if you feel the need to use the icon.

Funny: not much to say about that one.

Informative: Don't forget to say thanks for the good info...

Friendly: Its always nice to be thankful a card is always liked by your mum/dad/wife/husband/dog/cat. Taking the time to talk to them is 1000X better.

Useful: Why that is a carrot I will never know....

Optimistic: Please refrain from using in sarcasm.

Just one last thing. I have the power to remove any and all gongs. If I feel that they are being given willy-nilly, I can and most probably will remove them.

and no I do not want 500 personal messages tittle tattle asking me to remove them 'cause you don't thing it just. if you have an issue with Sam Smith disagreeing or disliking a comment take it up, via private message with Sam Smith.

A good point of view Jim, however a while back there was a "sand" storm (if you get my drift). that was very much against them going. So we all agreed to use them wisely and with thought.

Well at least I thought we had.

Now that is a result. Thank you Ian. I for one am more than happy with your solution.

For my part I'm still done with them in any form, and I will post where and when I can in the good old fashion way...The written word.

Thanks once again. I appreciate you acting quickly to promote the smooth running of this most wonderful forum....

I totally agree with Ron. As a newbie I have found the awards of gongs to be unhelpful. There does not seem to me to be any reason why some models receive many gongs and some so few. It does seem to me that just about every model gets medals just for turning up! Is every model really a great build? What criteria is used? After all he who praises everybody praises nobody. Why not just stick to the written word, that way we will all know why a person thinks a model is fair, good or very good, a gong does not really express what others really think about the quality of a model, it's just a rubber stamp.

I agree totally with Keith.......What took me 20 odd lines to put over my point of view, he's done exactly the same in 3 - and a bit!
