How about the Ian McShane character in 'The Battle of Britain.' He had a model Spitfire for his son.

In Callan, Edward Woodward is an assassin for one of the UK intelligence agencies. Not quite modelling but he was in to Napoleonic wargaming I seem to remember him painting the odd figure.
