I got a couple of sets the other day, although I'm happy with them they definitely fall short of the colours actually needed to do a complete job of modulating the paints to get the true 3D effect of shadows and highlights. I agree with Dave on this.

Adrian it's your choice mate, you've got the money to do it, I'm envious of you, but then again I'm pleased for you that you can have the paint you need at hand there and then. ............ultimate man cave stuff.......discount or not!

But getting back to the root of the question.......would I hope for discount?...........undeniably. .....?YES............but if I didn't get it I wouldn't let it affect my buying choice as I would have budgeted for no discount anyway, it's just a bonus getting some off. My local model shop gave me discount knowing too well that I would be back in the near future to buy something else...............more paints knowing me!, so they'll get back bit by bit what they discounted anyway.

Right so, mainly forget the boxsets and get entire ranges plus a few basics in doubles, I already use Tamiya and have all the range and extras, so it looks like Vallejo and AK are the next ones to get.

Of course I would pay in advance, money won't be an issue

Ade, vallejo and AK are effectively the same stuff, miguel worked for vallejo before leaving and starting up a sister company AK interactive. Theres a few extra products in the AK range which vallejo dont offer, but the paints themselves are the same and mixable.

I use the vallejo range, and as i said, i now have three full boxes of 16 bottles each of duplicate bottles. Thats why i said dont buy the box sets, get the model air chart and order each one, its way cheaper!

Plus dont forget to get drying retarder, gloss, satin and matt varnishes in vallejo, and their airbrush cleaner and airbrush diluter, as they work fantastic when weathering.

Also the Panzer aces range is good, but again, DONT but the ready made kits of five bottles, as theyre tiny, and for the same price as the kits, you can buy 5 17ml bottles of panzer aces separately, and AGAIN, you wont end up with lots of duplicates.

I use AK glass clear, as its brilliant for canopies and glass, and their dust effects.

I find that the bottles of vallejo last longer than tamiya, as everything you do, you use small amounts and add water to thin. Even when i airbrush, i tend to mix a few colours, and add satin or matt varnish, and a drop or two of water. Since having them, i hardly touch my Tamiya!

I tried the Vallejo varnishes, couldn't get consistent results so I recently sold them all on and reverted back to Tamiya varnishes which I never have any issues with, I guess its each to there own as I know a lot on here use them.

I have 3 large Really Useful Boxes with Tamiya paints in but also an ever growing range of Vallejo, though I often spend more time trying to get a decent coverage with them. Maybe when I upgrade my airbrush with a couple of new ones I'll have better results

You don't need many paints in order to mix the colour you need.. It looks good seeing the complete range nicely arrange on your work area but why not spend your cash on something else. I am retired banker which is probably why I would not advise spending more than you need to lol.

                  Sorry, I was confused.

When I said you should get the boxed sets I assumed those would cover all the colours and varieties, thinners and so on

That's what I meant - if you fancy getting everything a manufacturer has in their range, and you have the money, then do so

I am useless at haggling - I've tried many times - useless. So Adrian, do it, do it for me and all the other useless hagglers out there...............

I suppose if you roll up with a list and estimated cost, it will be easier for the supplier to offer, 10 or 15% etc.

Yes, i add a few drops of satin varnish straight into the airbrush, along with the paint, a few drops of water and mix.

It sprays just the same, but when dry, it has the satin finish, ready to take decals. You can also do gloss if youre doing pin washes, and matt for contrasts.
