Pete, in a nut shell some folks think the quiz is taking too much attention away from the models being built and they have also noticed, as I have, the drop in views and comments on build threads. They perceive rightly or wrongly that perhaps members dive in to the quiz and then don't bother looking much further.
As I tried to explain, but was shot down, take a look at the number of 'hits', call them what you will, for the quiz, then look at the relatively low number of posts on builds. It wasn't like that before. That is a fact.
I have a couple of theories about the apparent reduction in comments, but I'll keep them to myself for now.

I wasn’t going to comment on this, I put it down to one of those rare fall outs and minor squabbles that break out amongst the Forum, but here goes.
What is the reason for wanting to “put this thread to grass”?
If there have been complaints or comments about it then what are they? Being aware of the nature of the comments against this thread are important so that the same mistake is not repeated.
Is it because it is not a thread about building models - because it’s not the only one.
Does it breach the Forum rules, which one(s). The copyright rule being the only one that comes vaguely close).
There are many threads I do not read, find interesting or even think appropriate for this site but I do not feel an urge to push back against them, the exception to this would be a thread that breaches the Forum rules. On the bench: Airfix 1/48 Sea King HC4, Revell 1/24 Trabant.

An interesting point, but could it be a coincidence ? Can one thread really divert peoples attention away from other threads ? I really don't know. The thread in question doesn't distract me, maybe I'm odd ? Quiet at the back..Comment

Rick, I've tried to outline what is seen as the basic 'problem' in my reply above to Pete (stillp)
Cheers.

So what rules are being broken?
If distraction is the reason then all other threads that do not specifically include modelling need to be scrubbed.
Eg. What did you fly in. What flew over your house. Look at my new addition to the stash/car/kitten.On the bench: Airfix 1/48 Sea King HC4, Revell 1/24 Trabant.

Yes. Crossed posts there.

It's the volume of distraction on the quiz thread not others, that concerns some members.
Tag Quiz - 37.000 in about 6 months.......Then take look at views on all our builds.
Eg. What did you fly in today? - 5400 in about 3 years.
Before anyone jumps on me, I'm just trying to help fellow members understand why folks are concerned.Comment

Volume of distraction- measured in hits on the thread? Well if shutting down the thread makes “some” members happy then all the rest of us will just have to lump it.
I’ll change my vote and ask that the thread be locked. On the bench: Airfix 1/48 Sea King HC4, Revell 1/24 Trabant.

Personally. I don't fly any more, so never look at that one. I suspect some others are the same.

Perhaps the members are just curious as to where the 37,000 souls go to after they have viewed the quiz thread? Fair question, I suppose....
The modeller would presumable have liked them to remain logged in, look at the models etc. on offer and post a comment or just throw a few likes about.
Jeez Pete, I was just using that thread as an example!
Not you Pete, but I've had enough of being interrogated and corrected with some sarcastic posts when all I'm trying to do is help folks understand just why this thread has been opened. I've written all I can and am in danger of repeating myself and I suspect things are getting heated, so I'll just quietly watch from the bench.Comment

Oh dear, if most posts could have this many replies in as shorter time wouldn't it be nice. :rolling:
Gentleman, Ron and fellow members, time to end this don't you think., give the evening shift and those in far flung places chance to join in. We will never all agree, just mention paint for an example. !
What ever the admin /mods decide is ok with me.

Related to that, I still also can’t get my head around why a thread can be a distraction if you don’t look at it. There’s plenty of articles in the newspaper every morning that I don’t read because the headline doesn’t catch my interest, but I don’t complain they shouldn’t be in the paper … Forum threads are no different: just don’t click on one that you don’t care for.Comment

I still don’t understand this. It seems to be the main argument (though all we have is second-hand reports about the complaints), but can someone please explain to me how hits on one thread take away hits on another? Hits on a web page (thread, whatever) are not like money — there’s a basically unlimited supply, it’s not that every visitor to this forum has only a limited budget to spend.

My thought on this - whilst views/hits are not be a finite product, peoples time is. Therefore people might spend more of their time budget looking at the quiz v.s. looking at other topics, commenting and helping grow a community of modelers.
I also think that if someone new to the forum saw this and some of the more arcane questions on there it could be more intimidating for them to join - it could make the group comes across as a group of rivet counters (far from the truth, this is a very friendly, welcoming place).
To use the newspaper analogy if the headline is always something you disagree with you don't buy that newspaper, logic would follow then that if the quiz is consistently in 1st page of results for new posts people might not join the forum.

Just to add my two pence worth for what it matters, I have looked in on the photo quiz thread but not commentated on it (no surprise as I haven't commented on any threads recently) and realised it wasn't for me. Now as complaints have been made about the thread understandably the moderators have taken action, and if I had been a regular contributer to the photo quiz I would have been upset by the wording used in this thread, having said that I find some of the replies on this thread over the top. Since the closure of MM forum I have felt an underlying friction between some of the pre-existing members of this site and some of the incoming group and the other way round. The bottom line is that the moderators have a job to do which is sometimes unpalatable to other members of the forum but it's the only way a forum can work, I can only say that I now regret posting this forums attributes on the previous one, as now 2 groups of people are unhappy.
