Dont know if this will help but Im now 60 and I believe I am in good health. I stopped smoking when I was 25 when my first child was due and have never looked back. Everyone I know who did not stop smoking went on to have heart attacks in their late 40s and that includes my father who died after his 3rd heart attack at the age of 56. You have to believe that life will be good again after you stop and it will. At first it will be difficult because you will link all the pleasurable things you to smoking but dig deep and know that when you come out of the other side you will not look back. I would also suggest putting all the money that you would have spent on cigarettes into a pot and then watch the amount grow. Never miss putting that money in, its a great incentive. One final bit of advice, if you do give in to the craving and have a cig dont beat yourself up and think you have failed. You havent failed and some times giving up is a work in progress. Just regather your thoughts and start the stopping process again. Each time you will get stronger till you get so angry with the cigs that you just smash the habbit. All the best mate.

Good stuff ... gave up several years ago (smoker for 30 years plus) ... bought a packet of nicotine chewing gum and used that for a week ..... not a puff since. Found my 2 motivation points and thought of them each time i got an urge ... 1. health .. want to be around as long as i can be for my kids. 2. expense ..... rather spend ZAR25.00 on something for my kids. Worked a treat!!
When u find yourself wobbling drop a line here .. sure the lads will motivate you to go an do something else .. cheers

There has been a change of plan.
Today will be my last day of smoking and hell will be here tomorrow but screw hell I want a new expensive fishing rod and reel.
How you doing? If you're feeling a bit like a bear with a sore head and want to scream and shout at someone - I'm here!

That is very sound advice. It's a journey. Just because you take a wrong turn or two doesn't mean you give up and go home. Just takes a little longer to reach your goal.

A big thanks for all the support.
I did not stop yesterday as I wanted to get the place clean and get rid of all my smoking products.

TODAY is my first day without smoking and so far I keep wanting to roll a smoke. It feels like something has been cut away from my hands.
At this point I am going full cold turkey because I really do not want nicotine going into my system.I am scared that I will just end up being addicted to patches but they are there just in case.

I am so determined to do this because I really have had enough of smoking and the cost of it.

                  Ralph,
keep your hands busy, and your mind occupied - avoid the 'smoking void' - a time where you aren't doing anything, and you light up to fill that void!
I always thought that the difficult time would be in the pub ( yes, in the legal smoking era ), but I found it was when I was at home, reading, or listening to music that was the most difficult
                  Dave

                    Thanks Dave.
At the moment my mind is not on really doing anything.I am just trawling through the net looking at fishing gear thinking to myself if I do not smoke I can afford pretty much any rod I fancy.

                      Hi Ralph
                      Good for you.
I remember those first few fag free days well even though it was so long ago. You will feel crap, cough like hell, be irritable and not be able to think of anything but cigarettes. No easy way through it. Just hang on in there and think of the rewards in terms of health, finance etc.
                      Jim

I do not really bother with sweets.
I am doing ok though, did a bit of figure painting.
I do keep wanting a fag but then I just think of the money.
My head feels like there is an elastic band around it putting on pressure.

Keep hanging in there Ralph, take it day by day, or even hour by hour if you have to. If it gets too bad, go for a walk.....
