On the Takom Facebook page - upcoming model in association with Snowman Models

On the Special Hobby Facebook page

 Constructed, but never flew...................
Special Hobby also posted photos of the moulds/dies for their upcoming 1/48 AH-1 Cobra
This is where the the money goes! Machining the solid hunks of metal. Top two pictures show front & back mould halves, with all the alignment bars, the third shows assembled moulds, ready to fit to the injection machine. Not lightweight bits!

 Tim,
judging by some of the old Airfix 'Classic' series, over 50 years! If they are used with care, and maintained properly, then, many years. These look too bright to be just steel, probably a high grade alloy. Main problems are distortion of flatness of the moulds, which would cause flash, wear on the guide bars, which would cause mismatch, and erosion, which may cause short shot parts. Moulds like this will spend most of their life in storage, once set up running off a few thousand mouldings won't take long - then stored whilst other models are run off. If it's a popular model that won't be long - if unpopular, maybe never!
Short run makers will use a cheaper metal for the moulds, maybe not as thick, maybe less guide bars - that will reduce the life of the mould, but reduce cost, simplify manufacture & perhaps not need sophisticated injection machines

That container, and the ones in the background, are from the old SF wargame AT-43. I've got about a dozen of them Comment

They are new kids on the block. Saw a build/review of their S-38 on YouTube (Harry Houdini) and it looked rather good. So this 'should' be just as good.
Crisp detail, photo etch and all! I hope that they keep expanding into other torpedo boats as well.Comment
