WELL Peter you dint miss much an not painfull just weird all i see was a load of clear water bein pourded onto my eye an a very bright white light an loads of pretty coloured lights like looking through a kiddys colider scope but as i dint stop the op it was all over in 10 mins but i was bricking it an glad it was over an the surgon said i did well but if i have to have the other eye done now i wont worry to much as what i did look at what i did to tigers eletrics through worring
ATB AN get better an take it easy an yes i know the eye drops not great an your thumb but you will get through it it just takes time

Peter, I think that emoji of yours should officially be admitted among those already available here as it is a condition many of us will have to cope with, sooner or later. The guy I'm helping to clear out his firm sliced off his index just this morning; luckily it was a slice as thin as a San Daniele ham slice, but now he's sporting a huge white bandage pointing the ceiling.

A milestone day today (it shoud havd been last week but it was delayed) - the cast has come off. It has been replaced with a removable support thingy which I need to wear if I go out of do anything, just to protect it. It is surprising just how quickly muscle mass is lost; the big muscle that form the base of the thumb in the palm of your hand is really soft in the damaged hand as compared to the left hand.

the consultant was pleased; no dead tissue and no signs of infection so I have been referred to the physiotherapist to try and get some movement in the top of the thumb, it coud take a couple of months to get some movement and know the final extent of the damage. It could be worse.

i have managed to finish the bird box I was working on at the time:

Simon - surprisingly there has been very little pain. i think on the day I had so much adrenalin pumping through me, and then loads of anaesthetic and then painkillers for the first week or so. I suspect that the pain may come with the physio, as i try to get some movement in the joint.

Great news Peter and I hope the Physio goes well. As an after thought, maybe you could sculp/make a 1/1 scale model of your thumb and try to paint it as pictured above. That would be interesting to say the least.........

The thumb looks a little frightening to say the least. Having been attacked by a rogue bandsaw blade I can sympathise .
Great job on the bird nesting box, should be snapped up , keep us informed on its progress please Peter.

Hi guys

time for an update: last week I had my first physio session: I was given 7 exercises, which only take about 10 minutes, but need to be done every 2 hours. On a normal thumb the end bone can bend through 90 degrees - mine could move 10 degrees. The second appointment was today and the movement has increased - to 12 degees - so there is a lot to do to get some movement back.

On a positive front, I had my second cataract removed on Friday at a clinic in Southampton. I was given sedation so cannot remember a thing! So far so good, unlike the right eye. i did not need to keep the eye covered with a dressing so could see clearly as soon as I woke up. More drops 4 times a day for a month.

One lense is designed for mid-distance, the second for long distance so for most of the time I don't need glasses. I may need them for driving and for resding small print, we will know for sure in a months time then everything has settled down. Very odd not wearing glasses since I have worn them since i was 16.

without hesitation I recommend the procedure.
