By the time you listened to this long introduction your past careing about how long the call might take, you could be up to no 40 in the queue. Eventually you get through to a no doubt over stretched member of staff who takes your details . Yesterday I asked for a rescue pack of medications . " I think it's gone to a doctor, don't know why that one , I'll check if she's in This week "
Lucky me, I won a prize she was in that day .The call went on " Could you ring tomorrow again to check it's been actioned !

Hi John. That sounds very like my old Salisbury surgery. It started off well, but got worse and worse over the years. Absolute shambles. I remember once getting told there were no appointments for six weeks, and when I said book me in for the next available slot after that because it wasn’t urgent, was told that they couldn’t book more than six weeks in advance. The best they could offer was emergency phone consults, for a non emergency. I was once signed off for eight weeks with depression and never once saw a GP face to face! All the Salisbury practices had merged into a so called super practice, so I couldn’t even change GPs.
My current Bruton practice is a complete contrast. It’s simply fantastic. The first time I phoned them I nearly fell off my chair. It was an afternoon, and I said the request was quite urgent. I was geared up for an argument, as always, and was absolutely dumbfounded when the receptionist said “I’m really sorry, but the best I can offer is tomorrow morning at nine thirty”…. They run a GP contact system by email that is responded to within a day so I don’t even have to phone them for routine requests. If I do need to phone they run a digital queuing system that starts up if you are more than number two in the queue. It tells you to hang up and phones you back when you are at number two in the queue. Hanging on the phone is an absolute thing of the past. I’ve never had to wait more than a day for an appointment and get a triage call on the same day if it’s urgent. Medication scripts are sent straight to the local pharmacy, which is equally good, and are usually there to pick up within an hour. Superb service all round. I bet a bean counter somewhere would say it’s not cost effective though.

                  Tim,
oh dear - 2nd dose? I'm keeping my head down & avoiding contact ( not difficult when I don't get out much ). I do all my grocery shopping online & have a Tesco Food Convoy every two weeks ( I've been doing this ever since I retired ).
I looks like the GP service is very patchy. My local clinic ( 5 or 6 doctors ) is excellent - you can book an appointment online, and they text you to confirm & remind you. You can usually get to see a doctor within the week ( difficult one to get to see is the practise nurse, who does my Diabetic care ).
One thing I would recommend, if you are on repeat medication ( like me ), is to use a prescription service. I've been using Pharmacy2U since I retired. I order my medication online, they contact the GP & get the prescription, make it up & send by Royal Mail - sending me emails to keep me up to date. I get all my meds this way, including insulin, which is sent in an insulated box, with ice packs! A lot of the Chemists offer this sort of service - it beats having to queue at your local Boots' to pick up repeats! The only thing to watch out for is public holidays, and I don't depend on their reminders to order meds. They say ten days in advance, but it's more like 5 before stuff is delivered, however better safe than sorry. I've never had a moments problem with this, although occasionally the Royal Mail slips a day or so!
                  Dave

                      Hi Tim
I've just got over the Covid virus - I tested positive for 11 days and I was quite bad. The annoying thing now is I'm still ill with a sort of chest infection. I just can't seem to get rid of it.
I would advise anyone to still be wary of this virus. It may have been 'defanged' but can still lead to a lengthy illness.

I'm sorry you have it again. Hopefully, this time, it remains just a head cold for a couple of days and goes away. It seems to be a different beast if it goes onto your chest.
                      Wishing you well
                      Paul

Cheers Paul. This time feels much different. As I said, I really wouldn’t think I had more than a cold if the test hadn’t shown different. First time I had it I was pretty rough for ages. It was right at the start of the pandemic and there were no tests outside of hospital. At least this time there are. I was really washed out and had a tight chest for at least a month, and my taste and smell senses never really came back properly afterwards….take it easy for a while and your chest will improve, but certainly don’t overdo it.

                          Hi Dave
i don’t see that many people either LOL….still caught it though. As to pharmacy meds, my local Bruton pharmacy is excellent. Drop off repeat scripts and pick up in a couple of days. They do the rest. I usually fill up my pill pots on Saturday for the week, check for the following week, and drop in any required top ups. I then pick them up towards the end of the next week. It’s an independent store which helps…..and it’s good to support local businesses where I can :thumb2:
