Apparently over 500 excluding painted mini roundabouts.

In all seriousness though, the roundabouts were only ever meant to be temporary.

The idea was that there would be traffic lights at each junction but they ran out of money for all the work that would require. So, as roundabouts don't cost a lot and they had the land and a lot of it, they did that instead.

Also 1/3 of MK is designated parkland
But those from MK are easily spotted as the left side tyres are more worn out than the right. And it took me 4 years before I managed to get a street map!!!:tears-of-joy:

I did hear that the guy who designed the road system for MK suffered a loss half way through the plan. Apparently his guide dog got run over.

He may have moved to Weymouth. We used to have a working road system prior to 2012, (Olympics). Then some planner came in changed everything for the 'better' and traffic hasn't moved since!!!!

It’s worse than you think…….you don’t just go around the outside, you can drive through the middle….years ago I was on a road trip with some mates. The guy that was navigating just looked at me when we came up to this and said (in his best Blazing saddles impersonation) Son, yer on yer own….

I used to work for an American company in Swindon, and I sued to enjoy taking American visitors through the magic roundabout. They were already on what to them was the wrong side of the road.
It's not difficult to negotiate, once you realise that you just have to treat each mini-roundabout according to the normal rules for roundabouts. So, for example, if you're coming from the town centre and want to go to Oxford, you can go left at the first one, right at the next two, then left to get on the A4132, or if you prefer you can go right at the first one, left at the second, then right. At one time there was another mini-roundabout in the centre so there were 3 possible exits from each of the 'perimeter' roundabouts, but that's been removed now.
There's a larger Magic Roundabout in Hemel Hempstead, but that doesn't seem to cause so much confusion as the Swindon one, perhaps because the larger size, particularly the centre island, makes it more obvious that it's just a collection of discrete roundabouts.
At one time - not sure if it's still true - Swindon had more roundabouts than MK!

Where did this INSANITY come from????????? And why is it tolerated?????? They even inflicted it upon us here in NW Montana, only to find that it is intolerable and folks wouldn't put up with it! one has already been removed and the other two are on the short list......Two problems NOT considered in the planning stage........one, eighteen wheelers that they wanted to bypass the downtown route.........two, snow plows, unable to negotiate the tight radius of said roundibout!!....literally destroyed the center island, many of which I have driven straight across in my 4X4 Dodge,5.9 litre cummins diesel, 3/4 ton behemoth...just because I can!!!! :tongue-out3: :tongue-out2::tongue-out::thumb2::thumb2:

Can’t say the planners have no sense of humour, by the way…..it was originally called County Islands roundabout, but all the locals called it Magic roundabout right from the start, so in the 1980s it’s name was officially changed to match……

Can we try to get back on the right road please.
At the next roundabout leave by the same exit you entered the roundabout from.
This should get you back where you set off.

They had the same in Hemel Hempstead, you came down the hill and there it was in front of you, cars going whichever way and not giving way to anyone.... The amount of cars and bike riders I nearly collected under the trailer....:smiling5:
