Unfortunately a lot of companies routinely break employment law, a friend who works in HR told me that. She went to work for a firm with 8000 employees & over 300 industrial tribunals against them. In six months she had it down to 20 or so, constant run ins with bosses who wanted her to rubber stamp decisions which she refused as they were illegal, didn't surprise her when they sacked her. Last she heard the company was in serious trouble with employment law.
