Penguins w/o ice, how strange. They seem quite tame though, or just uninterested.

I reckon it maybe due to superiority in numbers!! There are thousands of them.

End of the summer in South Georgia - breeding season over, so not that many penguins. Proper ice free penguins are found in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and the tropical Galapagos

Meet my new friend, he wanted to come and hug me but it’s not a good idea with all bacteria in their mouths a bite would mean evacuation to hospital in Port Stanley. This is before he stopped feeding and noticed me.

There's actually a colony in Cape Town..... Boulders beach..... At one end there's a viewing platform looking down on the beach..... At the other end though, if you're willing to clamber over some rocks, you will find yourself not only walking amongst them but also swimming with them.

BarryW just seen this Barry. A very cool looking trip!

I take it you visited Shackleton's grave? (Only because I see the church behind you and your lad).
Bad pic due to the rotors intruding into the image!!

Sadly the grave area was out of bounds as evidence of avian flu have recently been found around the grave area. The grave is some way away from the church.

The authorities are very careful about bio security and we have to go through lots of checks before going ashore. I must have had to step in a dozen or more chemical dips while moving around. The specialist expeditionary cruise lines are heavily involved in conservation in the area and are very much part of the solution here with their onboard biologists etc.

Barry, does the British Antarctic Survey team still have a base on S Georgia?

Yes indeed, it is quite a significant size too at Grytviken.

They were the reason we visited in 86. Plus mail delivery!!!
We had free reign to look all over Grytviken, very interesting looking at the damaged whaling boats, harpoon heads and bronze lying all over the place.
The wildlife was astounding. I waited ages to capture a pic of a pup waiting for a feed from its mother.

Today we are getting ‘more normal’ South Georgia’ weather apparently. We have had it lucky over the last few days. Off to The Falklands later.
