I find that the best heater you can get and doesn't cost as much to run is a Calor gas heater, works well and you have to take some layers off in around 10 mins of turning it on.

Al, I don't know if you have bought one or not yet, but you can't beat a Morso Squirrel log burner. I put one in our new narrow boat which the missus and I fitted out 5yrs. ago on the front lawn. Great little heater, you'll be more than toasty believe me!

Hi all iam getting a 10ft by 6 ft shed in the new garden and need to ask any idea what it would cost to put a basic electrical supply in or is it cheaper with an external power point and running an extension cable? Iam going to insulate the wall and put in a rug or some kind of carpet, any advice will be most welcome.

Scott, I needed more or less the same thing last year.

My mate, who's an electrician said the only safe way to permenantly wire up a shed / summerhouse whatever, correctly, is to use armoured cable. This he did for me but it was dear stuff!

I suppose the extension cable would be the cheapest but would it be safe?

I will now put my joiners hat on.....For insulation I fitted loft insulation between the timber uprights of the shed and then bought some 8ft X 4ft X 1/2" insulation board. Easy to fix, just nail it on with large headed plasterboard nails...Works a treat.

To finish can I suggest a very nice wilton carpet @ around £180.00 a mtr., plus a well stocked bar and a plasma T.V. complete with tastful dvds?

SWA is expensive, the other way would be to get some plastic water or gas pipe, the yellow or blue stuff Bury it in the ground and pull a 6.0mm Twin and earth cable through it. This will accomodate the ampage if you decide to use a heavy load like a 3Kw heater.

Depending on how far your shed is away from the house you could suspend the 6mm cable from a wire, the biggest problem i have when installing supplies to customers out buildings is the location of their consumer units in the house, you get some that don't want a pvcswa cable running right round their house but moan when you have to get all their floors up to run it internally.

You'll also need a RCD garage board and earth stake, conduit to run your cables in and sockets and switches.

I found the best light to work under is a florescent fitting, the bigger the better and something i'm putting in mine soon is a timed switch and outside light as i've fell off the decking too many times trying to get back to the house in the pitch black :lol:

One of the advantages of my little plastic shed is that it is small. 10 minutes with a standard fan heater and it is up to a comfortable temp with the thermostat clicking the heater on every 20 minutes or so for another five.. A 10x6 would take ages to heat up without good insulation. Last time i was spraying in there it was minus 4 outside and I was spraying wearing a T shirt and shorts!!! (please do not let this image get into your heads. Down that road, madness awaits.)

My old wooden 8x8 was not only cold, I used to have a halogen heater in there and still had to work in a coat (it was a woodworking shed for making dolls house furniture). The other problem with it was damp. All through the winter, my books, plans, drawings and other stuff just got so damp I couldn't leave anything in there.

One of the things I have found in my plastic one is that the kit boxes and rolls of kitchen towel are as dry now as when I put them in there in the summer.

An outside light is needed though, at the moment I use a headband torch to navigate my way across the lawn, still need to put a path in so it can be quite an adventure when it is wet and muddy, not to mention the mines that the dogs lay when they think I am going to go into my den..........

Hey darren, a PIR is cheaper than a time clock and you dont have to adjust it when the clocks change either, You could buy a 300W min flood with a built in PIR around £6.00 from Focus. I have no light switches in my workshop, i used a PIR i took off and old Sunflood. Comes on as soon as i open the door and turns off just after i have left. My mate copied my idea for his garage, he said it was great, no fumbleing for the switch, just open the door and on comes the lights.

Andy, had a spare timed switch from a job, just push it on on my way out then a couple minutes later it shuts off untill the next time i'm in there, the main light switch has a neon that i rewired so it stays on all the time, makes finding it in the dark a bit easier. All the gear in my shed is extras from big jobs the company does, it gets used or ends up chucked in a van or skip, waste not want not:biggrin:

The idea of a PIR sounds good but what happens when you just sit there racking your brain trying to work out what to do next? lol (I tend to do that a lot and would be cast into the dark quite a lot)

Me too Graham, i just set it to Max sensetivity and never ever have a problem. Works well. Put one on your Christmas list.
