I can't understand why Tamiya is flogging this kit when they have so many really well made, and beautiful, models? This surely can't be good for reputation nor sales???
So in short - stay away from the Tamiya Panzerkampfwagen V Panther Sd.kfz.171 Ausf.A 1/35 no: 35065 unless you're really into vintage (I suppose?) wonky kits for sentimental reasons!
.
they carry on making it cos the moulds were paid for a very long time ago so everything from now on is profit......and it still sells in vast numbers........always room for a cheap panther
if you want a dodgy tamiya kit try the Porche 959 or the 1/48 Sea Harrier
i love 'vintage' kits....im currently doing one that was 'new tool' in 1959Per Ardua

From now on I'm going to check the best before date, a.k.a. the manufacturing date, on every future models I might consider in order not to do the same mistake again.
Normally I wouldn't be upset about a vintage model, but there's vintage and "vintage"...
I have been looking at the Takom King Tiger 505 with Henschel turret and zimmerit and interior though as the next build for the summer, but I've done a pretty thorough investigation on that one to know it's good quality!
Need to finish painting the current models first though.Comment

Not all of the vintage Tamiya kits are poor, just the odd few. For instance their Panzer II can still turn out nice & this one was moulded in 1970!
The Panther, their first Jagdtiger (too short), KV-2...all should be avoided when there's much better options out there.Comment

Found these in my unpacked box of non model stuff. Got them just before moving house. A quick read of the book and I wish I had this before I did my Jeep vignette.Comment

Other Tamiya models costs about the same as the Takom Königstiger when you add things like PE so with that in mind the Takom model isn't that expensive - and you get all the extra joy of building all the internals as well!
Regardless of price etc, I hope not to score another kit like the Panther I just did because the quality was so bad. Not what I expected. I rather pay the extra money and be happy.Comment

Jens, your best bet is the Scalemates website. You can get a lot of information there, as well as links to online reviews which can be very useful. I've saved myself from buying a few dogs in the past!

That Panzer II isn't looking bad so you're correct in saying that old doesn't mean bad, but knowing which ones are is useful.Comment

It will all go nicely with my other tanks. I'm still on my British tanks at the moment but looking forward to cracking these when it comes to the Germans and the Russians turn
