    Kleer and present danger

Can I add talcum powder to Kleer to make matt varnish?

    Alright Tony

Funnily enough i tried this in a little beaker. It was like adding flour to water for me - the resuly like glue. Maybe i did something wrong. I just use some of Tamiya matt base added to the Klear. Even better I have Vallejo varnish which i just mix with a little water to shoot through the airbrush.

Cheers and am now off to work :smile10:

I doubt you could mix it well enough to dry without a white bloom, which is why commercial matt varnish has a bloom if you don't stir and shake it to within an inch of its life. Could always try it on a bit of scrap I suppose. No idea how much it would take to matt it down but it would have to be a small amount to dissolve it I would have thought.

I suspect you might make a good filler rather than a good matt varnish!

        Cheers

You have just found out how to make sanding sealer for wood.

Talcum is for all intent stone and there is not many things you can paint plastic with that can dissolve stone....

Just use tamiya flat base, mix with Klear in the following percentages

              10% = Semi gloss

              20% = Satin

              30% = Matte

Don't guesstimate, get a baby med syringe or similar to measure correctly, mix up a batch in a jar and store, (it keeps for ages), mix up a batch of each if you like, just label them.

Shake and mix well before spraying, do not use more than 30% or you'll just get a cloudy mess regardless how well it's mixed.

These are the ratios I used to use, (I rarely use Klear now, Shock, horror, save for dipping canopies and clear parts), Xtracrylics does a nicely spraying gloss for pre decalling / washing, big bottle, cheap, thins and sprays without running so i use that and accordingly the same make satin varnish, I use Fimo Gloss acrylic varnish for final gloss coats as it's the only one i've found that covers and dries in a genuine gloss finish

Andy, Kiddie Sainsbury's do the new version I think, i can check if you want?

From what I have read I get the impression the new version it the same even though its now a milky colour in its liquid state.

I know the Sainsbury's at Merry Hill should have it as its possible to add it to an on-line order, ironically that's where our on-line shopping comes from and not the bigger one down the road in Kiddie!

Sainsbury's have it down as ''Pledge Multi Surface Wax 750ml, do note you need Houshold Ammonia to remove once dry and alot of window cleaners no longer contain this from what i found, after a long hunt I found that boots do this for a couple of quid in the household section.

                    Thanks Rich,

So its Sainsburys for Pledge milti surface wax and not kleer and Boots for Household Amonia. Do i clean the airbrush with this Amonia after spraying the pledge multi?

Will airbrush cleaner not do the trick on the Pledge?

                    Thanks

                    Andy

                      Andy

Its the Pledge Multi surface Wax not cleaner as that is another product.

As for the cleaning it may be airbrush cleaners work, but I would not be sure, others on here may be able to help.

My personal choice is to dilute the ammonia down with water as per instructions and then spray into a home made airbrush cleaner after each use as its vapours are very unpleasant . Its possible running water through would be fine as its when the product is dry that it needs ammonia to break it down. As I am chicken i prefer to run some through anyway to be sure. So far no problems.

Its also advisable to not use your best airbrush just in-case.

Here is a pic of what you are looking for, you will see it does say was called Klear on bottle.

Original bottles of Klear, (just note if you search on a shop site it needs to be spelled Klear not Kleer), are for sale on Amazon, eBay and the like, usually for horrendous sums of money, i've seen them anywhere between £7 and £15 a bottle, given that the original reason for this being a modellors solid gold find was primarily that it was very very cheap for the quantity and what it did, You can get a hefty bottle of Xtracrylix gloss varnish for £3 which sprays more predictably and plays out not much dearer.

However, The stuff above, (which is also stocked by Morrissons BTW), behaves in the same manner, is about £3.50 a bottle, and smells lovely , becareful not to lay on too thickly as it can pool and dry slightly opaque.

If you use household Ammonia for cleanup, dilute about 6% Ammonia with water, alternatively use Halfords screenwash, which does contain ammonia, (i've yet to find a window cleaner in the UK which uses it now)

I've heard it alleged many times, i've sniffed more bottles of window cleaner than any normal person should, (seriously, I get some really funny looks in the supermarket), and have never yet found any mainstream or otherwise window cleaner to contain ammonia, (it's a very distinctive odour and unmistakeable), the fact is, vinegar (acetic acid)works well as an active ingredient in cleaning glass and is far cheaper and safer than ammonia.

It's feasible, though unlikely that if you cleaned lots of windows in an unventilated area with ammonia solution it could adversely affect you, whereas with vinegar based ones the worst case scenario is a burning desire for takeaway fish and chips.

A half litre bottle of household ammonia will dilute several times over and last a while.

IPA can be used to clean also.
