    Guys

I have to plumb for those all time Christmas or Easter Classics - The Great Escape or Zulu. Every time I watch Great Escape, I hope one day that Steve McQueen will jump the wire lol ;0))

    Other than that

    Dambusters

    Reach For the Sky

    Above us the Waves

    To name but a few

Only one of you mentioned Apocalypse Now. I went to see it when it first came out with my mates, who I was working with, from a well known "punk" band expecting a raucous evening. Not at all,we were all spellbound. Not long afterwards that band's now famous "Search And Destroy" T-shirts,featuring the helicopter assault appeared.

Some great choices above,I can't pick any one!

      Cheers

        Apocalypse Now

        Tunnel Rats

        We Were Soldiers

        The Boys in C Company

All Vietnam films, tried to add some that weren't already mentioned, and a wild card:

        The Assembly

It's about the Chinese Civil War and very compelling. Here's the trailer on Youtube:

I watched The Longest Day last week with my son. He was telling me which beach was which and where they went after the landing!

Watched Saints and Soldiers the other day. Wasn't overly impressed with it, but it was reasonably well made.

I want to see Inglorious B'stewards.

            Favourite films I remember are;

            The Guns of Navarone

            633 Squadron

            The Dambusters

            The Battle of Britain

            Where Eagles Dare

            The Eagle has Landed

            Saving Private Ryan

            TV series;

            Das Boot

            Colditz

            Kelly's Heroes

            Band of Brothers

            To name but a few.

I actually think 'Saving Private Ryan' should be compulsory viewing for all schoolchildren.. It might just help us to avoid going through it all again if we can get the next generation to understand the horror of being killed for something way beyond your control.

I don't know what I can really add to this thread but I like different films for different reasons.

'Saving Private Ryan' has got to be up there if only for the opening landing craft scene, which in my opinion, is now a classic piece of cinema. This film single handedly raised the bar in terms of realism and reinvented the war film genre.

Ice Cold in Alice is an absolutely great film and makes me thirsty every time - John Mills really enjoys that beer at the end!

Zulu, Great Escape, A Bridge too Far, Bridge over the River Kwai have great performances from Caine, McQueen, Hopkins, Guinness etc

(The bit where the army fires in ranks in Zulu would make a brilliant model)

I also like the more modern stuff: Black Hawk Down, Platoon and Full Metal Jacket

Another great film is the old black and white 'All Quiet on the Western Front'

It's very difficult to choose a favourite but if pressed I'll go for 'Ryan' for reasons mentioned earlier.

                Cheers Paul

BTW, there's dozens, possibly hundreds, of modelling opportunities contained in these films!

Missed a whole page of posts in my eagerness to get in with Apocalypse Now. D'oh!

Am I allowed to like the Vietnam section of Forest Gump?

Also watched a film at my cousins about a small bunch of Aussies trying to hold the Japanese off on an island. Forget the name of it, there's a dream/hallucination scene with a lot of mud!

Or "Johnny got his gun". It won't be on anybody's list of favourites,it's a pretty desperate and despairing film/book,but you'd go a long way to find a more powerful anti-war film.

                      Cheers

Hmm....hard to say, but I'd probably go for:

                        1. Saving Private Ryan

                        2. Black Hawk Down

                        3. Band of Brothers

                        4. Kelly's Heroes

                        5. The Thin Red Line

Close runners up are Pacific and probably Enemy at the Gates, even though I hate Jude Law :P

I remember this one only because it was used in the Metallica video for their song One, very thought provoking stuff.

Another one I've remembered which I quite enjoyed,

                              Three kings

of course, how could I forget

                              hot shots

                              hot shots part deux

'topper, we need you to go in there to rescue the hostages for us'

                              'why me'

'because you're the best, of whats left'
