Porbeagle (anyone caught one of these?)

for those interested in fishing, i have just this morning caught (and lost) a Porbeagle shark just after high tide, depth about 20ft, shore fishing at Longniddry bents (east coast Scotland... its about half way between Edingburgh and North Berwick) Never caught one before .... smart looking fish.

Using mackerel on a simple ledger type rig, the reel started "smoking" as it took off, as i was only fishing for lightweights (free food etc) i had 25lb line with a 12lb leader (and stupidly no bloody trace ... hence the "and lost" part)

Got it as close as 8-10 ft and noticed the length of the gill slits and a distinctive white blob on the dorsal fin, it was about 4 ft (ish) making it about 3-4 years old.

It thrashed about too much in the shallows and eventually snipped the line (dammit)

If anyone catches this fish in the near future ......... i'd like my hook back please

Sweet, those things are starting to get a little thin on the ground, sadly, I'm surprised you managed to get it that close without a wire trace, the Huss down here are bad enough...

    Congrats on the catch though...

the air was indeed tinted a blue colour. both for the thing popping off and the fact I was a prat and didn't use a trace (was only expecting flat fish or the odd little coley).

will go back again but I doubt I'll hook another of these, as Andy says they're quite hard to come across.

just bought some lightweight traces which will be used from now, even on light tackle.

will be on the boat again soon so time for some wreck fishing, could even drive over the firth and throw some mackerel through Oles' kitchen window

LOL. I'm sure he'll appreciate that.

There have been a few caught around Denmark over the years, Unfortunately not by me! T'was a big bugger 94,5 kilo which was a new record.

There are often reports of them around kattegat og Øresund but no reports of them being caught!

94 kilo?? wooah ... glad this one wasnt any bigger, i'd have put me back out.

comparing it to some carp, cod and pike i've caught i'd say this weighed no more than 30lbs .... mind you they have a bit more "pull" when they bolt than the average fish i'll tell ya

Hopefully it's not just a one off Colin, would be nice to have some make a comeback...

I've not been for some time now, a large Spanish trawler kept raping the grounds off the North Wales coast and things went really quite, I might dig out my gear one of these days and see if it has gotten any better...

Apparently they were added to the "red list" at some stage Andy, but it's all a bit vague as they seem to have a different status in different waters and people are still happily fishing them on rod and line all over (from what i've picked up on t'interweb since friday).

Trawler fishing was an occasional problem when i was back in England, usually fished off the east coast around Norfolk and, more often than not, the locals would say the same thing about the trawlers ravaging the areas.

Luckily the biggest "regular" vessels i've seen reasonably "close in" up here are the little 15-20ft crab/lobster boats that lay a string about 100 yards out along the coast, they don't bother anyone at all, proper fishermen/women that do it to feed their family and make a little extra to live on .....just as they have for generations no doubt.

Even when we go out wreck fishing, we normally only see a couple of other "serious" boats in the area. There's always the few little dingies and 10ft outboarders that have Dad and kids fishing on board near the harbour but thats it really

Knife between teeth and dive in after your hook man thats theft he was tired and close enough to retrieve it and just hope his big cousin is not about.

My time for "Rambo" type antics is over Martin, i'll just take him to small claims court i think

and yes i wouldn't want to meet his cousin ... he's a bit tougher eh?

I NEVER want to say "we're gonna need a bigger boat"

I've been reading a lot of news reports about folk catching these Stuart, they seem to be a bit of a handful and I'm glad mine decided to chew through the line and do a runner to be honest
