MODELLERS BLOCK!

It happens, even short term 'blockage'.

I've just masked a canopy and now face the prospect of assembling some RB Productions seat belts. My eyes are aching just thinking about it. I'm hardly falling over myself in a rush to start

It doesn't help that it's not a bad day here in Brum.

It happens. Either get on with other things and wait for the bug to bite again, or try setting small achievable goals to get thing moving, for instance this evening I will dry fit the fuselage or undercoat the figures.

Yup we all get it some have forced blocks others just can't get started. Like many of you with the change in the weather Mine is a bit forced as the garden needs a going over. Swmbo Wasn't happy the other week when we had a couple of nice days. Reason being I couldn't be arsed with the option of gardening and instead chose the bench option. Nothing was said but we all know when we are in the dog house Yes? The garden is looking better so I feel I can gently ease back to the bench.

One thing I have learned is to get a cheap pre made model and add to it or weather it or wreck it or make a dio for it. Simple building that you can tinker with, this then can alleviate the modellers 'funk' without opening a new kit and staring into the box and glaze over.

Yes - over time I've had periods of years when I haven't made models, and even in my 'on' periods, there are times when I can't be bothered. A few things are helping at the moment:

- Having my 'workbench' permanently set up in one of the kids' rooms (now vacated!), so I don't have the barrier of getting all the stuff out

- Having more than one model on the go at once

- Having more than one hobby (running, climbing, cycling and playing in a band provide variety)

- Oddly enough, being busy helps. If I've got loads of stuff to do in an evening, I'm more likely to squeeze and hour's modelling in first. If I've got nothing to do all day, I'm more likely to idle it away.

I guess it's true that anything that's worth doing requires an effort sometimes - sitting in front of the TV is much easier but a lot less rewarding.

Suns out, the garden is going mad and lots of other distractions. My bench has been cleared off since I finished the jag twin stick.

It would seam that all those hours in the dark winter nights at the model bench need to be cleared out with a good dollop of fresh air and sunshine.

I have been doing my Boote for so long now, and lost momentum with my Atomic Annie, so put them to one side (well in the cupboard)

I've not done a aircraft kit since my teenage years, (flying models excepted) but spotted something a little different on the net yesterday.

Reduced in price and different to anything I have done before, hopefully delivered tomorrow or Thursday, just hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew.

Will post in latest acquisitions when it arrives.

All valid comments, and I think I could tick most of the items which cause it. The other thing that can get me into a modeller's block situation is a building a kit which promises so much and turns out to be a long mission with filler and replacing bits and pieces. Funnily enough if I know it's a shocker of a kit before I start I get into it, but when it's a 'top of the line' kit that goes wrong it's terrible for my motivation.

Yep we've all been there, me recently but it will come back you just need patience (and us modelers got loads of that) as said try something different but simple and quick don't try to add to it or improve it oob is best it will come back.

What works for me is actually the very opposite to some...

I will only have one model on the go at a time. Consequently I have already planned out where it will be displayed and will have an idea of what the next model will be and where that will be displayed as well knowing I wont be starting that until the current one is done. I just need to take a look at my display case and visualise the completed model in its place and anticipate the next in line and my mojo is restored for an hour of so at the bench.

It was a lot harder though in the old days before I had a dedicated modelling bench... it was always the idea of getting all the stuff out and the thought of having to put it away that put me off, if you had an hour to spare, 10 mins or more would be lost out of it by just the prep and putting away. Now I can do 5 mins just to get a little satisfaction of seeing some progress or a couple of hours to really make a mark...

One further thought. What can also get me going is the purchase of a new tool, gadget or even paint or glue...... I just want to get and use it.

You are not alone Barry. That's how I operate too. One at a time and the next one, or a couple of options, lined up. I have a Tamiya 'uber kit', the P-51, in my cupboard, which I've been eyeing up recently! No way will I contemplate starting it until my Bodenplatte Dora is finished.

I've ordered a snowy backdrop for the finished photos of my current build which, like a new tool or similar, helps me to get on with building the model itself

I`ve experienced the same in the past, and no doubt will do again, what I tend to do is to put the kits away and take some time away from modelling, I normally get the bug again once I start looking at various modelling sites, reading model mags, books etc.

This seems to get the juices going again, then I cant stop

How many places in the world have our lucky status where we can decided if we want to do this or that to our hearts content within our own terms in comparative luxury.

I bet a lot of human beings in many parts of the world would love to lose their mojo. But then they have never had the chance to have achieved a point where they can lose their mojo.

Yes luck is on our side.
