Italari 1/32 Panavia Tornado GR1

BarryW
Based on what you've seen and built so far, would you recommend this kit to others? ... (seeing what you've done so far kind of makes me fancy grabbing one and having a bash ) 👍

More progress

The fin has been assembled.

It had six very small p.e. parts to glue in place, each side. I am not a fan of p.e. but I managed these OK. I just hope they stay in place.

The wings went on well, a bit of fiddling around is needed to get them in the right place and a smidgen of filler was needed in places.

I will next be painting the cockpit parts next. More to follow.

This seems to be going together very well Barry. All credit to Italeri, their kits can be of mixed quality.

BarryW, The Tonka is looking great fella, you're certainly whetting my appetite from one..

Have you looked at the 1/32 Spitfire's by Kotare ?... I'm currently working on one and totally love it..

Would love to see what boatman would make of one... plenty of scope for popping a small motor inside it and spinning the prop realistically.

Hi Chris

it is a complex kit and is certainly not one for beginners. It would be interesting to see what you could do lighting it up….

I have a Kotare Spit in my stash, It’s a superb kit. The 109K they are producing will be an interesting one.

Totally agree with you Barry, It literally 'falls' together and the attention to detail is brilliant.

I'm also looking forward to the 109..

Here is the cockpit, without seats, all came together well. There were no instructions for their 3D detailing set, hopefully I got this right, there are more interior details to add in due course.

Again no instructions but looking at pictures below is how I should attach the first part.

That's right, the seatbelt looks as if it is sized for a 1/24 scale kit, not 1/32. It is unusable.

I have to decide whether to source another set of seatbelts elsewhere or see if I can put something together that looks vaguely right from just the straps.

Note to self:
You really must not bother with Kits World 3D decals. Experience tells me that they
1/ May have poor register (not these)
2/ Details are significantly inferior to other 3D detailing sets such as Quinta Studios,
3/ There are no instructions for many sets, (those that they do provide are online)
4/ They have a lot of sizing issues. Some major like this kit, some only minor.

Wonderful progress and some superb details. Shame about the Kits World decals. They are certainly not worth having. I seem to remember that once before you used them and were disappointed.

Nice start barry , those seatbelts are very disappointing , I’ll bet they werent cheap either . Cant believe they dont supply an instruction sheet for such a complicated seat belt setup . Kit looks very nice though , cheers tony

The time came, the time that I was anticipating with a little dread, the time to join the nose to the main airframe. Bear in mind we are talking about some complex shapes from multiple pieces, the room for error and potential for disaster was high.... Few companies can really pull it off, Tamiya, Zoukei Mura perhaps but this is Italari who don't have the best reputation.....

Well.....

...... it don't get better than that. It will need a little filler on the sides and bottom but thats it.

Here are the seats. I used the straps only and made the best of these. Not totally accurate but at a distance they don't look too bad at all. Incidentally, I found the register to be so poor I had to do some hand painting on the straps. Stay well away from Kits World. For my IDS version I will try to source a Quinta set, they look amazing but cost nearly £60, that's for a full interior detailing set as well as seat belts.

I have been also working on a number of other sub assemblies including the stores. Fit is very nice indeed, no issues.

All credit to Italeri and also to your prior construction, that nose fit is sublime. £60 on something that works well is better value than spending much less on something which is useless.
