Next one for this GB is the Cutty Sark..... 1/350 by Academy

Cutty Sark was one of the last tea clipper ships...... Designed for speed rather than how much cargo it could carry........ Get the new harvest of tea as fast as possible to britain to get the best price was the name of the game

Ships aint my thing so this will be a challenge even though it looks a basic kit........ So basic there isnt even a call out for paint!..... Need to do a bit of research lol

Well that looks good mate, will you be doing rigging as well? Lol....😂
I'm sure I built this ship, but possibly the Airfix version, in a smaller scale, way back when, and did not do a good job of it, I know the rigging caught me out, but I was only about 10 or 12, so?
Good luck with it, will follow along... (y)

Goodness me, I think I had this kit in the 1980s. There will be a lot of information out there on the Cutty Sark. The ship still exists doesn't it?

Yes, she's still in Greenwich, London. I had a fascinating tour of her some years ago. Have loads of photos if you need any.

Small but perfectly formed!

Looking good. Often used to play in Greenwich park, and walked past the Cutty Sark many, many times. I think it was refurbed a few years back.

That's an awful lot of sail for not much hull, wonder how fast she was?

She was a tea clipper wasn't she? I think they were used because they were fast, as tea was expensive back then.
Just did a quick google and they did about 17knots and could do about 350 miles a day apparently, so they (clippers) were some of the fastest things at sea back then....

I am following along Paul. Looks an interesting project.

I used to live a few minutes' walk from the Cutty Sark, as a small boy in the sixties, and Greenwich Park was my playground, too!

She suffered a catastrophic fire a while back, during a major refit, but she's been superbly restored.

I remember when Sir Francis Chichester's 'Gipsy Moth IV' was placed in dry dock alongside the Cutty Sark in 1968, after her famous circumnavigation. We went aboard, and I remember being amazed at how tiny she seemed. Unfortunately she slowly decayed until it was unsafe to allow visitors aboard. She languished there for some years, but has now been restored and she sails again.

I of course made the Airfix Cutty Sark back then, got it nine-tenths completed, but an older brother 'sat' on it - to this day I still don't know the truth about that tragic incident!

Following with interest, of course.

Nice choice Paul, looking forward for seeing you put this one together.

Good start, good luck with the rigging 👍

Geoff.

That’s quick work Paul, looking good 😊

The rigging guide is a bit is a bit vague 😮

Geoff.
