Looks good Tony. Is this stuff like a Maskol-type fluid? I did a Macchi Saetta years ago and used blobs of Blutac. Looked like it had the pox.

Yes its very similar to maskol joe , its a latex fluid that dries very rubbery , its main drawback is its impossible to clean out of a brush and it stinks like fish ! It was always used in schools back in the day over here for sticking paper etc but we mainly used to make great big rubbery balls with it or paint it on your hands and peel it off once dried like some horror movie !

I wonder if ordinary PVA would work as well?
There's a nice randomness to the blotches... Just thinking (aloud) a stippling brush might soften the edges a little...

What I meant was, stippling the edges after removing the glue / mask. Just an extra time consuming idea in small scale...

Y'know, this is another technique like the mysteries of hairspray or salt dusting. I suppose I could learn to splotch with an airbrush, if I could dial it down enough...
I will make another of my Regia Aeronautica 'planes.

I used vallejo model color acrylic pete , I was concerned about it attacking the paint too , the test piece didnt show any problems though .

And as Tony said, you can paint it on your hand and then peel it off when dry - and that is so tempting to get some to do just that.

Airframe now complete , primed and paint has begun . I started with white round the rear fuselage which was masked off for the fuselage band . The grigio azurro undersides followed this then this was masked and the top surfaces given a coat of giallo mimetico ( sand ) . The top colours continue round the leading edges of the wings and tailplanes and right under the fuselage with a soft demarcation so blu tac rolls were used for this . Once the top has thoroughly cured i can start blobbing on the copydex .

Is it better that leg hair catches the pinged etch, rather than the carpet monster? I think we know the answer to that one!

Y'know, It's rare to see a 202 in a giallo mimetico on verde mimetico Metropolitan scheme, rather than the usual Orientale / desert colours, so I'm full of praise for your choice.

Having said that, I've always wanted to do one of my 202s in an interesting 'combination' scheme I've come across; while the 'plane was mostly spots on 'sand,' one wing was the darker Nocciola Chiaro with smoke rings! Off a completely different 'plane!

Well the experiment was only a partial success . The Copydex didnt affect the paint and did its job , the failure part was down to me . My blobs were very clumsy and too big , meaning when I removed them it just didnt look right - too much sand colour showing . So out with a stippling brush and make them all smaller by overpainting the edges with the verde mimetico. I could have just hand painted them in the first place and saved a lot of bother but hey ho , its a lesson for next time. After touching up I’m now a lot happier with it so next step is a gloss varnish then decals.

Can't quite decide whether I prefer the bigger or smaller spots, but the larger ones do more closely resemble a couple of photos. Now he says that..!
At least the 202s don't seem to have used the 'poached egg' schemes like MC.200s and G.50s

Does look good though. Looking forward to the fuselage band reveal!

Nice work Tony. The masking worked well, and your touch ups look good
