What about

"The Tuscagee Airmen" ( sorry if I have spelt it wrong )

Its the story about the first African American officers that flew the Lightnings escorting B52 bombers during daylight hrs over Germany,

The injustice and predjudice those guys faced was terrible but they soon became one of the elite flying units of WW 2 and the bomber crews actually started to request them for their escorts. Awesome, I actually had the privelidge to meet one of those guys at Kermit Weeks flight of fantasy on a hol in florida, a few yrs back, gt guy.

Regards Sub.

B52's over Germany? :dancing1:

Just kidding, Sub. I'm REALLY glad you brought this movie up. I've yet to see it but totally explains why to the posters above the need to rename the dog in Peter Jackson's remake of "The Dambusters" So little respect for these American heroes-breaks my heart the way in which America has treated African Americans.

Another film i really like is the German one Stalingrad. Again, like das Boot i mentioned earlier, it portrays the Germans as humans rather than blind-disciplined robots. Again, it's so much better in original German.

Funnily enough last Friday, i showed Enemy at the Gates (Jude Law) to some students at my film club. With my students being Russians their response was close to hostile :) Historically inaccurate and above all Bob Hoskins calling himself Nikitta Sergeyvich Kruchev in such a cockney accent spoiled it for them. For me Enemy at the Gates is alright but not to be taken seriously.

Someone earlier mentioned Pearl Harbour... vomit vomit! U571 has the same effect on me.

I like Memphis Belle because i love the B-17 but the acting leaves somewhat to be desired as well as Hollywood artistic licence.

I make no appologies for mentioning this film again Sub, but 'Days Of Glory' rides on the same theme as 'Tuscagee' but these young lads are pure N. African who join the U.S.army and fight through Africa / Italy and end up in the Ardenne.

Stunning, thought provoking and very, very sad.

Now that the thread has been revived I might add my list too... ;)
There was however a more recent similar thread so I though it was this one I posted in to my defence. Perhaps they can be joined?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Full Metal Jacket by Stanley Kubrick? It's a masterpiece and a film that'll never get old!
It's not my favourite war film though because that is Where Eagles Dare. There are many that come close but this one is special to me and I recently discovered that my kids (12 and 14) also loved it :smiling3:

Other war films I love are:
The Guns of Navarone
Kelly's Heroes
The Dirty Dozen
Force 10 from Navarone
The Eagle Has Landed
A Bridge Too Far
Platoon
The Deer Hunter
The Killing Fields
Inglourious Basterds
Saving Private Ryan
Brestskaya krepost (Fortress of War)
The Longest Day
Defiance
(with Daniel Craig - very good film that went under the radar for many)

And although a mini-series but has to be mentioned as some of the best war drama ever produced: The Band of Brothers!

War films are very expensive to produce and often they are inaccurate and pure fictional, but every now and then a really good one pops up and this I like!

So sorry for me too breathing life in this old and dead thread but movies are an even bigger hobby than modelling to me so I just had to add some of my favourites before it was closed and forgotten ;)

No question, best war film---- - Zulu....

Others;
The Longest Day
A Bridge too Far
Battle of Britain
633 Squadron
The Black Book

Mostly made in the 60's, except the last one.

Some that I like,

Battle of the River Plate
Cross of Iron
All Quiet on the Western Front (B&W)
Kajaki (one of the most realistic films I have ever seen down to the weapons uniform and insignia worn by the different paratroopers)
Battle of Midway
Hope and Glory

Admittedly I've not read this whole thread, but I hope somwone mentioned The Dambusters.

in no particular order

battle of britain
where eagle dare
longest day
the big red one
zulu
apocalypse now
blackhawk down
kellys heroes
great escape

For silliness.
Dead snow
Iron sky

For graphic and thought provoking.
Hacksaw ridge
Schindlers list

For nostalgia, (watching as a kid with my Dad)
Ice cold in Alex
Kellys heroes
Numerous other b&w and colour oldies, above us the waves, bridge over the river kwai, dambusters, battle of Britain, merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (anyone else remember that?)

I can forgive vehicular inaccuracies in older movies because they simply didn't have the vehicles or technology to create them realistically enough, the T34-Tiger in Kellys heroes and numerous discovery type documentaries, the buchons in bob.

I have high hopes for the new dambusters and had hoped to take my Dad to see it but sadly that won't happen now.
As mentioned though P Jackson is a plane nut and wingnut wings series are touted as the best and most accurate kits of ww1 aircraft.
I read that allegedly they're renaming the dog digger, close enough but without the offensive overtones.

Finally, least favourite or any film that's instant turn off?
Any modern ish conflict scenario where 'bros' chest thump talk about family (their team) and say hoo-rah. No!

Well, that should do it for another 8 years. See you all in 2025. :tears-of-joy:

What is really wierd is we had another thread on the same topic started in September this year.
