Hello - I am hoping someone can help!

My father has recently been diagnosed with an illness that prevents him using his left hand. He is a die-hard scale model fan (he's an engineer so loves making anything really) so the fact that he can no longer make his models is pretty frustrating for him.

Sadly I think if another family member was to do them with (and for) him, it would totally take the pleasure away for him so I am wondering if there are models for people with limited mobility, in particular, those who only have the use of one hand. He can still use his good (right) hand but unfortunately his left hand is totally out of action.

I'd love to be able to help him and cheer him up a bit so any advice on more accessible kits or ideas of how to told the airplane, car, boat... whatever he may be making!... would be very much appreciated. I was thinking of a clamp or similar but Google isn't throwing much up. Perhaps if he could do the main parts, he may let us help him with the more intricate bits!

Thanks for your time

That's a hard one, replacing a hand with a tool will always be a compromise...
Scalemodels are very fragile (both the plastic and paint-finish), so the clamps need to have a soft grip...

I personnaly would try somthing like this to start with :
NEWACALOX-360-Degree-Rotary-Soldering-Helping-Hand-Flexible-Third-Pana-Hand-Multifunction-Sold...jpg
Link

Hope you can find something to help him.
Cheers, Steven

yes that one looks quite good with the extra clamps

Hi Emma
i can’t help directly, but I would think you are after some type of clamp to hold the item steady while he works with the good right hand..has he any mobility at all in his left hand?
it might seem off the wall, but have you thought of contacting an organisation such as help for hero’s? I know they are set up for military veterans but I also know they use model clubs as mindfulness exercises for PTSD sufferers and amputees because I’ve contributed kits and equipment to one in the past. They may have ideas they are willing to share?
i wish I could help more, but I’ll look around a bit and see what I can come up with.....
Pass on my best wishes to your Dad.
cheers
Tim

A blob of blu-tack on the cutting board can be helpful.

I’ve looked around a bit more and someone with a stroke has used a large blob of blue tac for years.....see the thread here..
Another idea I got from that thread is that Michael Perry, a very well known miniatures sculptor only has one hand. The company he runs with his brother can be found here...
https://www.perry-miniatures.com/
Might be worth contacting the site and seeing if he can offer any ideas....
Hope some of this is of assistance.
Tim

Just noticed this duplicate thread....I’ve answered with some similar, and some slightly different ideas on the other one....
Cheers
Tim

Thank you Tim, I've taken a look on their website and found a couple of useful testimonials so will look into that further. I appreciate the advice everyone has given so far

Hi Emma
hope you get something sorted out. Your father may have to adjust his expectations, but there is no reason why he should give up something he enjoys. Is he getting medical assistance? If so, the specialist or physio may have contacts as well.
cheers

Yes he's under several specialists at the moment. One has suggested joining a local model group so I've reached out to them

Hi Emma
Thanks for the reply ref the name. Your dad has excellent musical taste. I’ve always been a big Peter Green fan myself ;)
