discussion Vallejo Surface Primer

In my search for a good white primer, I bought a rattle can of Vallejo Surface Primer the other day. After having used it on a model tonight, I think I can recommend it: it sprays well, it goes on evenly, covers well, and dries fairly quickly. The price I paid, €12 for a 400 ml can, was not too bad, and cheaper than my previous try.

One minor issue is that it seems to have leeched some colour from the plastic, but I’m not entirely sure that it actually did. Maybe it’s just my eyes deceiving me, but the painted area seems to be ever so slightly green rather than white (I sprayed it on a green plastic kit). Maybe I should try spraying something made of metal with it as a test.

I find when using the bottled primer thin coats are needed to build up the coverage. Esp with the white, it appears quite translucent.
Did you do several coats, i've no idea how the rattle can goes on .

I did several coats in one spraying session I’m still not 100% sure it actually turned a bit green.

I’ve used Vallejo white bottled primer but never rattle can..it can be thin or appear thin as well at times.. gues it depends on how much thinner I use..

White does seem a strange paint. Its not the first time I've read people unhappy with the coverage.

if so I wouldn't be surprised if it had dissolved your plastic - I found the thinners it contains to be very aggressive and stopped using it after dissolving small plastic parts. I think it was ok on white metal figures though.

Went back to my old favourite, Halfords acrylic car primer

I’ve been using some UMP white primer for the interior of a Ryefield Abrams,and got poor results airbrushing it, and I am used to an airbrush.

Interesting Martin, I primed some German figures in white smocks, used the Vallejo primer, shook it for some time, and it still looked washy. Have since painted them with top coat and they still look poor.
