That's great John. I find things like that are so frustrating and make me angry.
Jim
They are indeed Jim, ok when going right , but the minute you have a problem . Don't think it was even worth trying the *" help desk " they just read out from s list of possible problems . It's the same when you read those FAQ, none seems to match your query.

Naps are good. Very good....zzzzzzzzzz.
Wake up Paul, nap time over . :smiling2:

Each of the thatch videos I have looked at on UTube have not been what I want. Watching 1/1 thatching the layers of reed / straw are laid in lines with the widest part of the stem pointing down ,on the first layer a second is placed and then all pushed back to line all the ends up at a slope backwards. This continues up to the ridge .
Models seem to have the layers facing down , regardless of the material used , be it toweling , hemp or brush stems .
I want to try the other way , so tomorrow morning using double sided tape I shall experiment.

HI John i really loved the banter between you an 570 it gave me a real good laugh an cheered me up no end how you think it all upi just dont know but keep it comin
an the build is goin great when you get your thatch sorted

There are generally 3 levels of support. The first is a drone who is working off of a script. The second is a low level tech who works with a knowledge base & the 3rd is an engineer or a highly trained tech. The secret is finding the shortest path to 3. I was a 3 for years and if I couldn't fix it over the phone/remotely I traveled to the customer site worldwide. Not all companies do this, but the 3 is the secret sauce.

Hi John
I look forward to your thatching experiments. I am sure you'll find a method that you're happy with.
Jim

John,

I represented thatch using balsa wood sheet. Using a wire brush (I used a file card) to separate the fibres and distress the surface. The advantage of this method is you can pre cut the shapes to size then distress them.

Sorry I can't send a pic of the result as it's now to big.

The trouble with recreating thatched roofs in modelling, is that most types of thatching just leaves the ends of the straw, reed or even heather open to the weather, so that the water runs off and doesn't soak the length of the thatch, but this is something that doesn't look 'right' when done in a smaller scale - I look forward to seeing your results.

Thank you Chris, 570 and I have the same sense of mad humour, we do bounce off each other . He has long been under the care of Matron and some others ( I can't say who due to the Official Secret Act ) After a long treatment plan he has improved enough to to be let out unaccompanied, but followed discreetly by one of Matrons staff .Meanwhile as you know my treatment is ongoing, there is hope though as the new treatment offered by Matron is said to be highly effective.
Good luck John. I hope it works out.

Andrew, try as I might it didn't work well, so started again by cutting a section of brush and dipping the ends in PVA glue. Think had I done that first the double sided tape may well have been good .However I've use PVA straight onto the roof and stuck the " thatch " done. Hope to cut it back a bit tomorrow and add to the depth .

Totally agree with you on that Paul, unfortunately these days you only seem to be able to speak to level 1. Gone have the days where you could ring someone with the knowledge of a level 3 like you were .
Today I had to speak to someone from the bank about accessing an account with a lasting power of attorney, although they were very helpful due to the legality of the LPA I have to now go into the bank in person . There is nothing better than a face to face meeting in my mind .

Hi Jim, as I mentioned to Andrew things are progressing, somewhat slower than I intended due to the phone call to a bank , setting up a new mobile phone , followed by a new set of house phones !
By last night I was totally worn out setting up the new mobile. :smiling2:

Good idea Paul, never crossed my mind. I did try a section of blue foam and can imagine how it looked on the balsa. Hopefully mine will look ok . Might well have a play with a section of balsa as have some thick 10mm in stock .:thumb2:

The trouble indeed Gerry, not an easy subject to replicate. I had a look at Terry Toweling, combing the strands down. Might look good for wargaming, but at 1/35 it just doesn't look right .
Hopefully by Sunday I should have something to show !

Hi John,

I managed to load a picture, This is the effect of brushed balsa, the more you distress it the looser the fibres get.

John,
just to give you the heads up, I've heard on the grapevine..(hospital heating pipes), that Matron has hired a new nurse, who apparently is very proficient with her extinguisher handling skills, forewarned is forearmed comrade..

Thanks Paul, now this is what I want, :nerd::thumb2::thumb2::thumb2: although I have redone one with the bristles I really think another done like that is called for. In my case its only a small section which should be relativity quick to do .
I'll post both later.

Thank you Chris she's younger and more attractive than Matron. Don't tell Matron this or we will all be in trouble. !!!!!! I shall keep an eye out.

Not only is she more attractive but she seems to enjoy handling "hard" cylindrical shaped objects! :tongue-out3: .......................I'm just getting my coat;)

The thatch does seem to be something of a problem to get looking right, just ask Donald Trump!

453.
Warning!
Just look behind her at the trophies she's won.

Perhaps for needle insertions or 'similar shaped objects! :cold-sweat:

John

That balsa effect does look good.

If that doesn't work out, this landed in my YouTube feed today...
