I can remember my father helping me to build this, in the early 60's

Good news. I will probably buy one. I've ordered one. I restored a broken (and expensive) one about 12 years ago:

A tip for anybody building one of these, the outrigger wheels are very delicate and are prone to breaking off. My solution was to glue a thick disc of plastic on the underside that raised all outriggers off the ground.

Very good friend of mine was a pilot on the RN's Hovercraft Trials unit at Lee on Solent and took the craft out to Hong Kong too. Remember them bouncing around the Mulberry in Portland harbour attempting to turn to line up with the slip way on the Air Station.

There were traffic lights on the waterfront road at Lee-On-Solent to allow the hovercraft to cross from RNAS Daedalus onto the sea - I was at college in Warsash, just up the Solent from Lee & used to visit several hostelries there..........

Remember the lights. Used to transit from Deadloss to Seafield Park for various courses. One of the pilots from a hovercraft was shot in the Solent. Evidently stray round from the firing range at Browndown. That generated into a real life 'Mayday' call from the hovercraft.
Strange how we never really took up the hovercraft considering it was a British invention. Yet the USA and Russia use them. (Militarily).

On the Meng Facebook page, available December, a 1/9 BMW R1250GS ADV.....

Length 253mm so it'll be quite an imposing model. I'll be interested to see how they've moulded the wheels with the spokes terminating on the outside edge of the rim.

A bit like the fairy battle I think Richard. Cutting edge in its day, but its day went quickly. Not helped by the poor performance of US torpedoes at the time either…having to drop them at just over 100mph was a suicide mission.
Wow thats some great info Tim.One to buy at Telford in November me thinks bud.

Yes i remember having one aged 11 in 1980.Caked in tube glue and ended up binning it.

My guess is two side pieces that go around a central ring.
Yeah, that makes sense Jakko, but with the rear rim being quite wide, any seam is going to be tricky to hide.

I wonder what state the moulds are in for that SR-N1? As far as I can tell from Scalemates, the last new tool was back in 1960!

The Photo is of the Vosper Thornycroft VT-2, the only one built - used by the Royal Navy for trials - built 1972, sold & scrapped 1981 ( for parts - the same engines were used by the SRN-4 cross channel hovercraft )

I had a little discussion over on Scalemates about that last year or so, and apparently, in the tool industry, newly made moulds intended to be the same as old, worn-out ones doesn’t count as “new”. “New tool” means a completely new design, it seems. So for all we know Airfix remade the moulds ten times since 1960, but on Scalemates it still counts as a reissue rather than newly tooled.

Thanks Dave! My apologies, the photo is 'only' 50-odd years old! It was at Browndown but for the life of me I'm unsure as to why we were there (probably 'On the bus, off the bus'!)
