Boatmans Super Tomcat F14D Build

how big would a Nimitz class carrier in this scale?
That one is actually fairly easy without a calculator: 333 m long, so in 1:32 that’s ten metres, leaving a remainder of 13 m — slightly under half of 32, so call it maybe another 40 cm. And what do you know?

Better start looking for a disused church or gymnasium for sale ;)

Though seeing the trouble this kit is to put together, I don’t think many would fancy building enough of them to fill a flight deck …

AN THANK YOU Jakko for your answer too when i built my nimitz i knew that this 1/144 scale was as big as i could build it as ive had people say why dint i build it in 1/72 scale but when i said work out the size it would be an they changed their minds quick lol an you are right about the troublesome build i only hope that big super hornet im buildin next wont be such a bother

If it is, then you’ve had good practice on how to deal with it from this one ;)
AN HI Jakko yes i think you are right there but dont know if the ole mojo will stand it though LOL as this kit is the hardest kit ive ever treid to build but to be fair to trumpy it may be the result of me fittin in lights an openin hatches that the kit was not designed to do as like the cover over the gatlin gun was made to be either closed an no gatlin gun or gluded open with the gatlin gun fitted but me wanting the best of both worlds well it made more work on gettin the cover to fit over the gun so i suppoce its part my fault in the bad fittin but some other parts were just bad fits an this is the first plastic kit ive built for a fair while so in realty im a novice builder

Coming on nicely Chris. You have certainly had to sort out some fit issues along the way but it will be worth it.

AN HI Steve yes the big cat is gettin built an as i sais in the post above some of the fit issues are proberly my fault but quite a few are not mine as the main undercarts did not fit as about 2mm out but again maybe my fault as i dint build it to the instruckions but that was due to the fact that i had lost faith in them due to the fact that in my opinion they were not very good an dint show where the parts fitted in after fit pics an barry said his big bombcat was not a good fit so it looks like i inherted some from this being the same kit phew but one thing for sure i would not want to build it again an i just hope an pray that trumpy 1/32 superhornet is a better fit as boy i had a lot more hair at the start of this build lol
an cheers Steve for stoppin an havin a look an today i hope to fit on the nose secktion as was goin to yesterday but freinds turning up stopped me an still a lot to fit on it an barryies words are still in my mind as he said the bottom part of the fusalage was a begger to fit an quite a bit of sandind an filein to get it to fit so im forewarned on that

Superb work Chris, that looks fantastic.

Just in case I've missed something, you've not servo'd the wings as well have you, or do they open and close manually?

AN HI AGAIN Guys well ive said for days now i was goin to fit the nose secktion on to the fusealage well to day it happened but first fitted it to gether by the eletric plug to try out an im not goin to say yet if the all work as i want to keep you all in suppence lol an the wirein is a nice clean fit with them plugs IMG_0050.JPG

an its not a tail sitter so thats one good thing IMG_0051.JPG

IMG_0053.JPG

an here the nose is fitted in right home an its a terrible fit as the bottom fualage plate doesnt fit but i was exspectin this as barry said in his bombcat build it took a lot of filein down to get it to fit an snap mines the same so will get out the dremel grinder to take a bit off IMG_0055.JPG

WELL ANOTHER HORROR STORY HERE look at this gap about 2 mm short on the top of the spine of the fusalarge so out with the plasti card to bridge that gap cant understand it as in the last pic the bottom part of the fusealarge was to big Aaaaaaccchhhrrrr so more grindin down to get a fit this kit is givin me nightmares an just as well the big hammer is down in the shed lol an in barryies bombcat it looks as though he had the same problem an there was no glue fitted in this jiont just pushed in ti it clicked so i cant get it right home an i cant get it out so i have a nerve tabs to calm me down IMG_0056.JPG

AN its not the wirein at all as it all nice an tidy an missin the fusalardge jion easy so that not the trouble make me wonder if this was a teabreak kit AaaarrgghhIMG_0057.JPG

but if i can get over these fit probs then she should look a nice tomcat but for now got to takle all these probs IMG_0058.JPG

an starboard side well thats me done for today exscue me while i have a nervous breakdown Aaaaarrrgggghhh this kit is the very devil but at least the nose swivels up nicely so thats one thing in my favor IMG_0059.JPG

She is looking good despite the hassles you are having mate.
I have every confidence that you will get there in the end.

Could this be a knock-on problem? Meaning, it results from the poor fit of the earlier parts, so that had you gotten those in exactly right, this gap might not have been there either?

HI Jakko i dont think so as the front nose section all lined up on each sides so not something ive done but if you look through barrys bombcat thread on this page you will see he had the same prob but not as bad but he had to do a lot of work sanding the jion in his fusalarges spine so im sure its not me an if that was the case jakko why has the bottom part of the fusalarge met up an as barry said he also on this part has to do a lot of filein an sandin like im goin to have to have a look at his bomb cat thread an you will see what i mean

I agree, in that case it’s almost certainly poor kit design. Hopefully you can fill the gap well enough that it won’t be obvious.

Man I hate it when that happens, it wouldn't be so bad if it was on the bottom, but that sucks it being on the top.

Other than that though Chris it's looking good.

YES Jakko it is a poor kit design in my book like the probs ive had perhaps this is an old kit before every one got fussy lol but yes i'll get over it but really its work i should not have to do urg an got to fit an grind down that bottom fusalrge plate as well oh dear

an hi Arnie yes so do i on the bottom is getawayable but right up top in plain sight its gonna be a job to get this down smooth as not only a 2mm gap but the front part is also 2mm higher so how much i'll have to grind off lords knows an just hope it wont show to much
cheers for lookin in both of you will start on the gap today

WELL GUYS ive been atthis gap fill all day an it was a job to stop it gettin out of hand but ive treid to keep it local to that jiont an it has now been filled but its not right yet as im sure there are some dimples that will need to be refilled but wont know yet till ive spray painted it as ive run my finger tip over the jiont an it seems smooth but i bet there will be dimples to refill an thn spray paint again but at least its filled IMG_0060.JPG

an just lookin at it it seems low but till paint on wont know proberly so ive taped it all up an just now spray painted it but now got to wait till paint is dry then it will need to be sanded an painted again
