Only a wee bit of progress today. (SWIMBO's list came into effect!).

Dry fitted the rotor heads to the assembly that would be the gearbox. A metal hex drive shaft connect the two heads to the fuselage.

Then I started on the tail external sections. In this case the stabilisers, only managed to get one side completed.
I do like this kit - everything fits together so well. Learning from previous builds that dry fitting is key. However, this doesn't really need it.

Once I have all the sub assemblies put together I will start on the painting.
Oh, I did manage to mask off the main cockpit windows. No pics!!

That's all folks, for today!

Doug

Thank you Jakko and Chris for you input.
Jakko, well spotted. I never noticed the mirror effect!! Chris, thanks for the suggestion. I did try it out but the locating tab on the bottom of the IP isn't central. As the right side clashes with the right hand seat pilots console. That would have worked otherwise.
Considering my options I think I'll probably go with Jakko's paint the console choice. Never done it before so it'll be an experience.

However!! Another stumbling block today. I was making good progress assembling the upper rotor head. The hub alone was some 18 parts. I was very happy with the end assembly. I also assembled the lower section of that rotor head, (Parts E65 to E50), and was then called in for lunch.
Here lies the rub. Just prior to SWMBO giving me a call I had cut a part off the sprue, (E26), and laid it next to the 2 sub assemblies on the instructions which were lying on the cutting mat!! Came out after lunch - E26 gone - missing - not where I left it. Nearly 2 hours I searched! Could I find it? Could I heck!!! Even blind Pugh, sorry - SWMBO couldn't find it and she uncovers all my mistakes as a rule. Annoyed - Oh - just a lot!!

I have searched al my old sprue boxes for a similar shaped piece off a previous kit - nothing as yet. Tomorrow I will have to delve into every spares box I have to find something suitable.

Some progress!! I thought it was going too well!!

Finish building the model Doug….then you’ll find it!

Re: your instrument decal, I’ve painted then varnished the panel then applied the decal with micro sol & micro set. With patience and the right amount of softener a decent finish can be achieved.

Looks like I'll have to invest in some Micro-sol/set. Been thinking about it for a while now. Thanks for the tip Rick. :thumb2:

Not a lot achieved on the Helix today but I do have freshly mown lawns and a seagull :poop: free car!!!

All I managed was to clean up and assemble the starboard stabiliser. ( I did remove the two fuselage half from the sprue and clean up to check the fitting of the stab's.) nice tight fit. Pleased with that.

Two half's with stabilisers dry fitted.

Hopefully - do some painting tomorrow? (Fingers crossed).

Never used Micro Sol/Set but I have gleaned from other posts on here that they can do wonders. SO - I ordered some today - should arrive tomorrow!! I'll give what you say a bash when it arrives. :thumb2:

Great progress Doug , the scratched missing piece looks mighty fine . This looks like a lovely kit to build . Cheers tony

Thank you Tony, it is indeed a nice kit. I will definitely be buying Hobby Boss kits again if this is how well made there products are.

I can’t really say much about their aircraft kits, other than that their 1:72 scale easy-assembly ones are quite nice if a bit lacking in cockpit detail, but their 1:35 scale kits I’ve built are decent enough. Hobby Boss is part of the same company as Trumpeter and I ❤️ Kit, BTW, and they’re all generally of the same standard.

I discovered there lineage when I emailed them about my missing rotor part. The reply came from Trumpeter.

Late as usual , sorry Doug.
Thought that replacement part you scratched looked perfect, bet you felt really pleased when it was finished .

Today, lots done! A good day for bench time.

Pic 3
Russian AF light blue for the deck.
IJN green for the frames, closest I could eyeball looking at colours on the internet.
Large cabinet - silver.

Pic 4
Some of the cockpit controls hand painted.
Cabinets in place, electronic boxes painted either black or silver. (Winging it as far a colours are concerned). Likewise with switches, control buttons and panel lights!

Silver cabinet dry fitted, panel on right has to be painted and dials or gauges hand painted!!

Pic 7
Rotor heads now painted a satin black with control rods painted Aluminium. (Will dumb them down a bit - way too shiny for a flying machine).

That's all for today.

Any comments or criticisms accepted with a smile!:smiling3:

Glad I bought my magnifying headpiece - came in real useful today!

After studying some internal images of a Helix I have modified my paint scheme a tad. So today has been spent with my magnifiers on and doing some delicate paint work on cockpit switching and such!! Also added a bit more tot he rotor head. Starnge the kit tells you to paint the heads black but all the images I have examined show so many variations of grey. I'm not repraying the head but I am adding a bit more detail as in control rods and nut ends. Still a lot to do on the heads.

Pic 1
Close up of cockpit controls. Changed the colours of the levers after studying images!!
The panel on the left I have painted. I added black inside the dials and aluminium surrounds. (As per an image I found on the net)

Rotor Heads, as I mentioned, lots more detailing to be completed yet!!

That was the main push today, I did spray the rear bulkhead and dry fitted. As with everything so far, a nice tight fit.

That's it for today.

C&C's most welcome and thanks if you've got this far!! :thumb2: ;)
