    Brian's Sovereign of the seas

Superb Brian. The lines of the vessel look really good from stem to stern. John

    Brian's Sovereign of the seas

Brian Good to see you're off again. I don't think the model company scrimped on the pins. They probably expected people to remove the pins after the initial gluing was dried and to replace them with small scale Tree Nails. In other words very thin wood dowels drilled and glued where the pins...

May go dark for a little while

Good news Tim keep it going. Just don't rush to get rid of your cane, my doctor friend always tells me that he sees more patients injured in falls than with their original hip problems. John

    Next figure painting project

After painting the little guys for my tavern I got the bug to do some more. So this is the start of another project. First of all the quality of this little figure is just outstanding. He is modelled after Albrecht Durer's famous knight engraving. This is the 28 mm figure. and just to show...

    Brian's Sovereign of the seas

Brian If you do have problems with forming the bow, it is sometimes useful to fill in between the bulkheads with balsa wood blocks that you can sand to the correct shape. Then the planking will line up easily over the balsa. John

    Brian's Caldercraft 1/72 HMS Victory

Just checked on Chatgpt and apparently Victory did carry davits at Trafalgar after a refit a few years earlier. Boats were still carried in the waist on skids however although they would be lowered away while in action. John

    Brian's Caldercraft 1/72 HMS Victory

Brian I am not 100% sure but I don't believe that Victory had Davits at Trafalgar. Ships boats were traditionally hauled in and out via a tackle using the main mast yard, or the main mast fore stay. I would vote for no ships boats on the main deck but its your model so go with your feeling. John

    Brian's Caldercraft 1/72 HMS Victory

Looking stunning Brian. Just fore mast lifts, then tacks and braces to go. Oh don't forget a couple of halliards for the colours. John

    Brian's Caldercraft 1/72 HMS Victory

Difficult to see in your photos but on the mizzen mast it looks like you have a halliard coming down in front of the yard. This would obstruct the mizzen course sail. It could well be that I am mistaken. John

    Brian's Caldercraft 1/72 HMS Victory

The lifts and braces need some careful threading through the rest of the rigging and some tidy tying down to the pin racks, but seeing what you have done so far I have no doubt that you will make a great job of it. The end is almost in sight. John

    Brian's Caldercraft 1/72 HMS Victory

Brian Please ignore this comment if you don't care. Stun sail booms were usually placed on top of the yards and they were attached so that they could be slid out through the metal loops, when stun sails were required. This leaves the underside of the yards clear for the regular sails to be bent...

    Brian's Caldercraft 1/72 HMS Victory

Brian Does your model have boomkins? (sometimes bumkins) these are small booms that stand out from the prow on each side and provide an anchor point for the tacks. These are normally stiffened with what are called boomkin shrouds which hold the things rigid. The boomkins, at the scale of your...
