    Mk1 Spitfire Underbelly

Not sure if this is paint or here but here goes. I'm masking up my 1/48 Spitfire and the rear fuselage from trailing wing edge to tail is leaving me in some doubt. I know I can do what i like but looking at images both real and models there seems to be a variety of where the underbelly line...

    Masking with 'BluTack"

I've just repainted my cheapo Hurricane so I coould practice my airbrushing and I used a generic BluTack from Hobbycraft. Have to say that the I am delighted with the results. Followed advice to press the tack down to give a clean edge on the camo on the upper surfaces and it worked perfectly...

1/48 Revel Bristol Beaufighter TF. X

Just opened the box so this will be a future build starting in the next week or so. Large box and full to say the least. Looking forward to this but I thought I'd start the thread as a placeholder. Its a fairly new tooling so the fit will interesting to see. Same one as paintman of course

Airbrushing and Tamiya X and XF Paints

I have a couple of Tamiya paints and personal views accepted when it comes to airbrushing I need some advice please. I read that I can use IPA to thing Tamiya paints down rather then their own thinners. Also in some case they don't always need thinning down to airbrush depending on what you are...

    First Impressions

Well that was interesting. I found the airbrushes both a Clarke bottom feeder and a Fengda gravity fed both easy to set up and use. I think I prefer the gravity fed but that was mainly down to a bad paint mix on the Clarke. Both worked fine after cleaning and starting again. The actual painting...

    Removing Acrylic paint from models

I want to respray my Hurricane to practice my airbrushing. I could just put a coat of primer but I wondered if it was worth the faff with stripping the paint off and if in practical terms it was possible ? I've seen suggestion of things like oven cleaner and bizarrely Dettol ! I have varished...

    Next Build Ordered

Well as I prepare to paint my Tamiya MK1 Spit I saw the Revel Bristol Beaufighter TF. X - 03943 on offer at SMS so I went for it as I love the aircraft. Bought some more paints as well. After discounts etc another £33. I hate you all :loudly-crying:

    Lighting

Changing my study around to accomodate a small desk for modelling and I wanted a clamp/clip on desk lamp and LED would be nice but it needs to be bright. But then I thought does anyone here use anything similar. I think a bright light is essential and where I work at the moment is fine but the...

    Between Coats Cleaning

Reading lots about what to do when airbrushing between coats. Most of it tends to be offering options depending all all sorts of things. In general terms when airbrushing with either Vallejo Air with just a couple of drops of thinner and maybe a drop of flow improver what is the typical time...

    Airbrushing Camoflauge on Spitfire Wings

I was thinking about how to ensure clean paint lines on the leading and trainling edges on the wings. Then I saw this video, not the first on this, and they seem to spray away from the top then bottome and just mask the lines around the engine and fuselage. Ok, so this guy is very, very good and...

    Tamiya Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1 - 1/48

Ready for airbrushing for the first time ever. Building up the courage :fearful: Might just leave like this. Looks different.

    When Sky is Green

Looking for a nice sky blue for the underside of my Spitfire but the colours recommended all apear green, pale green but still green. What do people generally use for the underside ?

    First Airbrush

Just about to use my airbrush for the first time. Using Tamiya paints roughly how much to thin it ? That milk consistency ? Or I might use Vallejo Air. Can that be used neat or thinned ? Thanks

Building A Hobby for New Starters

Just bought an airbrush and an AS186 compressor which has cost £100 all in. Airbrush was from Alan even though the AS186 comes with a couple of "cheapos". Bit nervous about this in terms of paint mix and cleaning but nothing gained etc. Also I am working in my study as I dont have a dedicated...

    Tamiya Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1 - 1/48

Wings on and bit of filler being used as you can see. Panels not quite fitting perfectly. Not bad to be fair but needed a bit of fettling. Will need to do a bit more around the base of the wings on the top as the panels dont quite level up. But thats ok. Next is to start painting the basic...

    Model Shops

I have a local model shop in town and they have been there years. Nice couple but the guy who runs it hadn't heard of ICM. So I asked a few more questions and it seem he really specialised in 00 trains. And quite impressive his displays were but he did mention that the cost of locomotives was...

    Air Brushing Kit

Before I buy an expensive, relatively anyway, compressor and airbrush I wouldn't mind trying it for a while. My intention is to see if I get on with it and focus on larger areas rather than ultra fine work. Looking at various videos and reading comments here as well as looking at products on SMS...

    Weathering report

Had a go with my 1/72 Hurricane at some weathering. Used acrylic wash and it seemed ok but was a bugger to get off. As a beginner is it better to just do the panel lines and/or buy a dedicated wash as I'm not sure I got the water to paint ration correct or maybe applied it a bit "blobby" ?

    Tamiya Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1 - 1/48

Thanks. I have to keep resisting fiddling with it. It never looks "perfect". But fiddling is a downwards spiral so I'm moving on to fitting it in the fuselage and the no going back sticking that together..... Couple more pics of this, "delicate" stage. Note the small black oxygen tank on the...

    Tamiya Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1 - 1/48

Spent half the day putting the seat and cockpit together. Talk about patience being a prerequisite ! The detail in these Tamiya kits is astonishing but again, so much fun. I'm an amateur photographer but even I found it hard to get this picture right but you get the idea.
