1:48 FBM Scania 94 Fire Appliance - Various resin based questions

Right, I've just outlaid £84 on this model so I want to make sure I get it right!

The two biggest bits (Body and chassis) are resin, I've only worked with resin before once and it wasn't too bad. But that was on a much smaller scale (a 28mm Warhammer figure)

So, HELP!

I currently have two primers I can use, not sure if they're suitable though:

Games Workshop skull white

Vallejo white primer

Are these any good for resin, or am I barking up the entirely wrong tree?

Secondly, There are a LOT of imperfections that need to be touched up on this model, what's a decent filler to use with resin? I've got some milliput in my box somewhere, again not sure if that's a good idea or not.

Finally, I can't decide wether or not I should be looking at airbrushing for a model of this size, I've done a bit in the past and it was alright, Then I ruined my airbrush by accident. Can I get away with spraying the big bits with humbrol aerosol enamels, or should I really look into getting back into airbrushing if I want a good finish?

P.S. I'll get some photos of the kit up tomorrow when I'm a bit more awake! It's an outstanding bit of work, I'd be happy to leave it unbuilt on display!
 
Vallejo Primer will be fine. Just remember to wash the resin in warm soapy water and let it dry before you spray it.

Milliput will also be my first choice as it has a good working time and can be smoothed with a wet cotton bud/finger. Pinholes are probably better managed with a faster filler like Squadron or Humbrol.

As for the painting, I airbrush so my rely will be a bit obvious/biased.

Brilliant, then I'm all set to start building tomorrow!

I forgot to mention the vallejo primer has been sat for at least a year, undisturbed. Will it still be okay after a good shake do you reckon?

I'm warming back up first off by doing a 1:76 Dennis Sabre fire engine (seeing a pattern here? :cool:) I scored on ebay, I'll see how good a finish I can get brush painting that first, then might rejoin the airbrush crew.

I realised I promised photos and never delivered, they're coming soon I promise!

Now, To pick some brains.

The roller doors on this model are just decals, applied to flat surfaces. That's sort of lame considering the detail on the rest of the model.

SO!

Any ideas on making them more like roller doors? I've thought of scoring plasticard and painting it silver, but then I imagine when I stick it on it won't be recessed into the body properly, I also don't fancy scoring the expensive bit of the kit!
 
Don't be scared to scribe the doors. I use Dymo tape as a guide for my scriber. It will stick well enough to the plastic.Take your time,keep the tool parallel to the line you are scribing and don't try to do it in one go.

I gotta say, if the model with the decal 'doors' is the resin kit you paid £84 for, then you was quite definitely robbed! The whole idea of resin is that it gives better detail than plastic, and if the manufacturer can't even show a big feature like a roller door, then there's summat badly wrong. I betcha that most decent plastic kits would have the door as a seperate piece.

There's also your comment about the imperfections. Again, these should not be present on a kit costing that much. Or is the kit so expensive simply because it's very rare?

The models are all limited runs from what I can gather, so the price reflects spreading the cost of tooling etc I imagineAs for rarity, the whole series is available marked up to about £95 each on eBay, I got mine direct from the maker though, no problem getting hold of it.

Can't get over the detail on the triple extension ladder, 3 seperate ladders and they all slot together like the real thing, just need to do a bit more fine filing on the retaining clips so they all sit flat together
