Hello guys, a few years ago i built a few airfix models and enjoyed but for some reason i stopped!

Anyway im in a new job and have alot of time off and wanted a new hobby, so i picked up a scale 1/72 Lancaster bomber, started building it, i built it but had a few problems with it, i.e small parts, and broke a few bits when cutting them off the plastic, but enjoyed building it(not painted yet), i guess i have fat fingers lol!

Anyway went to a local model shop today and picked up a 1/48 Hertzer tank destoryer, and oh my days i really enjoyed building it. It was a tamyia build and i found it so easy to put together!

Should i stick at the 1/72 and get better with building them, or my idea was to stick with the 1/48 because its bigger and get better at painting, dunno how i am at paint because i have never painted a model!

Any advice

If you have trouble with the 1/72 give larger size a try, we are in this game to enjoy ourselves. There are lots of articles in this forum on painting to help you. Have fun.

Hello and welcome. Pleased you have rediscovered the hobby. For me with military kits I find that I have to go to 1/35 scale now as my hands and eyes struggle with the small parts. Again for aircraft its 1/48 scale that I prefer. Build in what ever scale best suits you. There are no rights and wrongs. You may find that the larger scale models simply take up a little more room once built.

Enjoy and have fun cheers

Alan's right, larger scales can be easier to build but beware! With larger scales it's always a temptation to try and add more detail - and you end up trying to fix parts just as small as those in 1/72 kits - only there's more of 'em! Only you can decide what balance you want between size of parts and level of detail. The trick is to find one that suits you personally. You'll probably end up buying different scales for different things like Alan who does armour in 1/35 and aircraft in 1/48. I suspect there are very, very few modellers who stick fanatically to one scale.

PS Welcome aboard.

hi there if you find 1\48 easier due to size then I would suggest that you stick with that, iam unable to see the smaller scales so I build only in 1/35 bigger than 1/48 but still not too big to find space to store them.

As everyone else has said build what you like.  I personally build in both 1/72nd and 1/48th for aircraft.  I prefer 1/48th as I think it is a good balance for me between detail available and the size of the finished model (my better half has a strict limit on my display space for finished models).

Tough one there...... ;)

It also depends on how much space you have to display the kits, 1/48 needs more "real estate", but if that is not an issue and you find the 1/48 an easier build, then I believe you have already made your decision. :D

With Aircraft I switched from 1/48 to 1/72 simply because I Wanted to model in one scale only but some of the really big stuff is only really viable in 1/72 - I don't want to be restricted, I want to build a Stratofortress at some point!

Tackling Revell's 1/48 B-1B Lancer was a build I really didn't enjoy - and helped in making the decision for me - It was Huge!

Vehicles for me is 1/35 - It's a nice size and the choice available is huge.

Oh bugger...I'm one of them. And all my paints have to be in number order too, And Sanding sticks sorted by grade etc.  O.o
