discussion 1/72 Fairey Gannet AS Mk.1/4

In what little spare time I have at the moment I have been beavering away at this.


It was given to me in a freezer bag by a friend, all of the pieces had been removed from the sprues, a couple of small pieces and the arrestor hook were missing as were the instructions. The kit decals were there though.


After scouting around on tinterweb I managed to establish how the thing went together, I'm fairly sure it is the Trumpeter offering. It's not a bad kit really, nice panel lines and detail, the fit is very nice and it is very solid when assembled. The only couple of gripes; The three canopies don't fit brilliantly and there is a stupid seam that runs down the middle of all three so they needed sanding and polishing. Not a fun job. Also, I couldn't get enough weight in the nose to stop it tailsitting so I dropped the radar doodab instead.


Its painted in Tamiya Sky and Dark Sea Grey, pre shaded with Flat Back and post shaded with a lightened mix of the main colours. The panel lines were picked out with Citadel Nuln Oil and it was cleared with Tamiya Semi Gloss all over and then a randomly sprayed light coat of Flat Clear on the horizontal surfaces. The exhaust stain is done using a Tamiya weathering set. I wanted it to look operational but not battered, hopefully that's what I've achieved.

That's gorgeous Jason! Great depth to the look of the build with the post shading, it brings to life a rather " interesting " looking aircraft

Blimey fella, I have a very clear image in my mind when I see the two words "fairly" and. "Gannet" together, and you built it! Has to be one of the weirdest planes ever built, but apparently it did its job brilliantly! Great build!

Jason after all that fun of sorting it out you have sorted it out.


Very nice paintwork. Nicely understated weathering. I really like the partly translucent shading on the wings that turned out very nicely.


An interesting aircraft. Assume the twin props gave good lift for take off and a brake on landing. Assume also the drop ailerons were used as airbrakes on landing on deck. Lots going on and looks very attractive.

That's a great looking aircraft you've got there Jason , there's one of these at the FAA museum in Yeovil and I must say those colours are spot on very nice

Thanks fellas. Glad you like her. I really enjoyed building this one, so much so that I got the missus to buy me the Classic Airframes 1/48 Gannet for my birthday . Got to wait a month ish but that leaves me time to gather up as many aftermarket goodies as I can, I fancy chucking everything and the kitchen sink at it. It's a fascinating aircraft, ugly and purposeful yet beautiful at the same time.

I was well chuffed when they started popping them out again. After three years hunting I got one for way to much over flea bay. I could have bought two now.
