discussion 1/72 Revell Flower Class Corvette-rusty-crusty.

This was a RC version that was the original Matchbox kit. She was in a very poor state and there was no way that she could have been saved, parts missing and the plastic deteriorating. So, I decided to have a crack doing the HMS Compass Rose from the film The Cruel Sea, well, her final resting place.

More damage made, parts added and coating has been started.

Things to note: A lot of fine sand, dust has been used so far, the Starboard side is part done, the Port side is all to do as is the bottom and rudder.
Also, a lot of glue is also used...running out of the stuff. This is also going to require a lot of paint and weathering.

Main issue, is the size of the thing on the workbench when trying to manoeuvre it, I have sand all over the place-a major clean up will defo be needed LOL.

Thanks fellas, back to it tomorrow. The missus has got me some more glue and the hull parts should be dry enough for me to manhandle.

Dang Si!!! You've given a new meaning to the word 'Crusty' for sure. This looks incredible so far. Are you using the dirt from outside or did you go and sweep out Ron's garage??? This is a really huge build and probably weigh about 10 kilos when your done with her...

Hi Allen, Ron's muck stash is safe...I use my home grown filth :smiling3:

You're not wrong, just the added stuff at the moment there is a significant weight gain, other side to do and then more detailing before primer and paint.

In fact, I have already come across a issue, cannot do anymore on the workbench, she is just too unwieldy. I think she is going to have sit there until I get a good enough day to work on the hull outside.

I am used to crusty-rusty subs and 1/125 scale LOL.

HI Si brilliant modellin but just had a thought though will you show the torpedo hole in the hull that sunk her ? sorry not tryin to make more work for you but thats what i was hopein to see how the metal come plastic is all bent but if you dont want to no worries

I did some thinking about this. You don't see the hit externally, the camera rocks to simulate the hit. The bridge announces send to Vipris, torpedoed stern of you. A internal shot shows crew in bunks when the bulkhead goes and water floods in. Commander then tells engine Chief to get out, they announce abandon ship and when in the water you see her slip under from a list on the starboard side.

So, I got a schematic of the Flower Class and found that the crew mess area was in front of the wheelhouse and bridge area, under the 5 inch gun. So, by my reckoning she got hit somewhere on the Starboard side bow section, this caused the flood in that area but not in the engine room as they still power.

I did a glancing blow hit on the bow area, there is the sonar/Asdic device mounted through the decks and out the keel area in this area which, again assumption on my part, was a weakened area so, if damaged, would cause flooding issues. If you look underneath, on the keel you can see the silver round thing, that is the housing for the Asdic.

OH WELL done Si damage looks great nr the bow but makes me wonder if it would have been enough to sink her unless they had all the water tight doors open so the ship would flood qiuckly ?

My thoughts are the mess area was large, it flooded via torpedo damage and the resulting Asdic tube damage. She wasn't a massive ship, 205ft length, 33ft beam, compliment of 85.

Now, another shot does show flooding near the wheelhouse aft section, inside so, I reckon the flood from Starboard dragged the bow under causing more issues. You're right, I reckon some doors must have been open for her to go down fairly quickly.

Just to add, the damage and the keel/lower hull would probably be buried in the silt etc upto a certain height so, some damage would be hidden.

I am not making a dio base with silt etc she is going on a stand, for size restrictions so, it was more of representation of damage.
