discussion 1/8 scratch Ferrari 250 GTO

I actaully started this one long, long ago but shelved it for no particular reason.


After finishing the Cunningham E Type I thought I'd dig it out of the dust and get on with it.


The body was cast in resin from a mould and buck I did ages ago.


My only foray into large resin castings as it's a filthy, messy nightmare.


Well, it is for me.


All my newer stuff is vac form.


Anyway - the shell was cleaned up, the panels sawn and scribed out, a temporary wood floor screwed in and a wood firewall added to support all the engine frame etc in the future.


Lots of sanding, filling, priming, and finally, a first coat of red...


Only another 4-5 coats of paint to go, and then lots and lots of polishing.


Eventually, full interior, boot innards, chassis and engine, as well as a stand-alone engine to go next to it.

Worth watching... one of the most beautiful cars of all time.

The car is now silver...


I've moved forwards quite a way with the engine and front end and will shortly be starting on the suspension etc.


Some bits of the interior are underway and the doors are now fitted.

Just a question, why spray red then change to silver, was this just a change of mind or was there a technical reason for this?

I've changed to silver as TBH, I have a buyer for the model and he wants it to replicate the car he used to race.


So it's now silver with 2 'gills' instead of 3.

I've moved forwards a little bit.


Two front wheels now almost finished. The tyres, hubs and rims are cast in resin and then hand wired.
Each wheel takes me around an hour. They are only 'placed' under the body just to get an impression of the look.
The rear wheels will be much 'fatter'.


None are fitted yes as I need them to calculate and plan the front linkages/suspension/uprights and brakes etc so that the wheels end up in the right place!
The front frame etc is next so the wheels can be fitted when they are finished.


Also, the rear screen is now in. It was vac formed from the same master the body was cast from so it fits a treat.


Hope to start on the rear end before long...

More to update:


I've now added the front windscreen - LOTS of hair-tearing to get a decent fit.
The screen trim is 0.5mm rubber with a silver vinyl strip in the centre. Chrome looked too 'blingy'.


The twin radiators have been built up and fitted with part of the framework.
I cast the parts in resin and made the frame from small bore ally tubing.


Front suspension gubbins almost sorted.
A degree of artistic licence here to make it 'look' like the actual setup but be strong enough to support the substantial weight of the engine and body.


Wheels not actually fitted just yet.
