I am going to be putting a coat of varnish on my latest project but recently had a bit of a disaster with decal fix (stupidly I tried to put it though my airbrush...needless to say a lot of down time occurred as I gave it a thorough clean).

I can't remember the make of it but it's a gloss varnish with a 50/50 varnish to water ratio.

My question is, can I put varnish with an airbrush or is it just going to clog it up the same as the decal fix?

Thanks

Drew. Can only speak with certainty on Vallejo Varnishes although most other types can be air brushed. Need to know the type of paint you are using for better & accurate advice. Enamel or Acrylic also would help.

With Vallejo Acrylic Varnish I airbrush direct from the bottle. Not sure, others will confirm or not, but think if you thin then you lose the gloss or at least thin it. The Vallejo varnishes go on well & look good.

Make sure you strip down the airbrush as soon as possible & give a thorough clean top to bottom as the varnish seems to be worse than paint for clogging the system. Learnt by experience, a bad one.

I often spray Xtracrylics, Tamiya, Gunze and Vallejo varnishes with my airbrush, no problems at all

Yet another vote for the Vallejo, but I have only heard good things about the Xtrcryix as well.

Only varnishes ive sprayed are Humbrol and Railmatch. Never had problems with blockages, although i do use a cheapo airbrush.

i used Xtracrylics varnish, thinned down with a bit of Tamiya thinner or even water, but still need to clean out after a good session. Certainly not as easy to clean as changing paint colors sadly :(

Can't say I've ever noticed any difference between cleaning paint or varnish

Use xtracrylix a lot, gloss and satin, imagine matte just the same, thin with water, spray as normal, very good. Out does dry fast so clean your ab immediately after. Also have sprayed tamiya, humbrol and various others, they work just like paint only difference is they're paint without pigment.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'll be doing this in the next couple of days so will be sure to post the results in case the issue comes up again in the future.
