This is the mount of Major Robert S Johnson, the joint top-scoring fighter pilot of the USAAF in Europe with 28 kills. He was equalled in the USAAF 8th Army Air Force by Francis S Gabreski. Johnson scored four of his kills in one day. On 15th March 1944 he shot down three FW190 and one Bf109. This model depicts his aircraft whilst he was serving with the 61st Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group, USAAF, based at Boxted, England in 1944.

Another dent in the stash. This was a four day job. Another old filler-eater. The fuselage has '1965' stamped inside. The decals were actually quite good for their age, a pleasant surprise.

Thank you Ian. These old Airfix kits aren't too bad, they are great for learning all about how filler works. ;)

Thats a neat little plane Joe.

Turned out very nice even if it was a bit of a pig to build.

I'd be very happy with that myself.

Great job joe , i love to see an old kit come out looking sharp, 1965 you say , its the same age as me , it must have been a good year!!! cheers tony

Nice job on that P-47. Looks really good, far too small for me in that scale!

Here's Johnson's Encounter Report from that day, telling it in his own words.

Cheers

Steve

Nice job Joe. Especially with such an old 'un.

I can recommend the Academy 1/72 P47 for a nice, easy build.

That's a neat build Joe, nicely done mate, and thanks to Steve (Stona) for the back story.

Tony.

Thanks guys for your kind comments. And thank you Steve for your background document, it is very interesting to read having just built this.

Great job, I like seeing the old Airfix kits come to life.
