Airfix 1/72 Supermarine Spitfire IXe

The cockpit is well known to be devoid of almost any detail. It is the worst part of this kit. Much of it will be hidden under the canopy, but I couldn't leave it like that. I discovered I had some spare parts left from a Spitfire PR XIX. I used the XIX cockpit floor, seat, stick and rear frame bulkhead. A bit of butchering on the base of the wing was required to make it fit. the horizontal bar, normally visible in the rear section of the canopy, was cut from this kit's horrible cockpit part, and grafted onto the XIX bits. I went on to add a Tamiya tape harness. Painted up, some spare decals for an instrument panel, it didn't take long to finish this bit and get the fuselage together.

Great job on the cockpit joe , through the closed canopy it will be perfect. Airfix have a few of these - very basic starter type kits with not many parts and virtually no cockpit details , then at the same price they have got some beautiful gems like the spit Vc , bf109e , typhoon etc . It always pays to have a look on scalemates and download the instructions for a particular kit before buying to see what you are getting in the box .

Very nice! I know it sounds stupid but this has always been one of my favourite kits, even with the crap cockpit. I wish it was easier to get hold of.

The PR XIX cockpit looks good in there.

That's true Tony. I bought this along time ago, probably not long after it first came out. Nothing I can't handle with this one, and it's still light years ahead of the old Airfix IX, which was the very first model I built here on this forum upon my return to the hobby

Cheers Portman. It seems to be sound in shape and size, certainly looks like a Spitfire to me.

I like the additions that you have made Joe. Looking good.
