discussion Alternative to Dremel?

I've just been waterlining the Airfix Mauretania hull

I've had a Dremel for quite a long time. I never leave it set up, because of the cables & the need to have a spare electric socket. In consequence I don't tend to use it as much as I might. I wonder if anyone if anyone has a rechargeable/cordless alternative to a Dremel - their cheapest is around £70 - it doesn't have to be a 'professional' heavy duty model, just the occasional use - there are a few around, but some of them are pretty cheap & look it! I'm not really wanting to drill with it, just use a slitting saw, sanding drum & burrs - all for short periods.
I'd be grateful, if anyone could point me in the right direction ( especially through personal experience )

I bought a "Parkside" one from Lidl about 4 years ago Dave, still going strong
Rechargeable,(which lasts for ages between charges), lightweight,and I think it was about £20 with a set of fittings.
Not man enough for heavy duty stuff, but perfect for modelling

thanks for the idea, but the nearest is in Gloucester, and my mobility is not good - it'll have to be an internet purchase

You could simply forget about it and do what everybody else did before Dremel.

that's the way I've been doing the smaller models, with a razor saw. I suffer from Osteoarthritis in my right hand, and any help from a power tool is an advantage!

I too have a Lidl battery powered system , but , prefer this for things that need a bit more power

When I look into it...........................

One sold by Lidl, the other by Aldi ! Also, looking at other lower voltage models, they have the same specs, but just cosmetic changes and price differences. I'm not impressed with large tool kits - I have a load of burrs/drills etc from the Dremel - as long as it has a couple of collets to handle those, I'm not bothered! Not really sure about voltage, it's only for use on plastic/filler & even that in short bursts! Looks like I'll be doing a bit more digging!

Another vote for the Lidl Parkside one! Can run very slowly, a great advantage over the mains powered ones.

I already have a compatible mains one from an auction site or I would have deffo. bought one like his.

He asks for a cheaper,and better alternative...
.. you provide, not only,a product for less than HALF THE PRICE,that does ALL he wants,and with LOADS OF EXTRA BITS,....and that has been tried and tested for YEARS .... BUT..
.... He doesn't want/need the extras,and will keep looking!! ...
Glad I'm just a simple Devonian methinks!!

in these days of financial turmoil, it is my duty, as a Yorkshireman, to do research, with due diligence, before committing to capital expenditure................

Hello Dave,
I have a COMO drill set, not rechargable but it takes about five minutes to set up and has a variable speed controller, like you I just use it for grinding and slitting. I cannot remember where I bought it, but was probably from evilbay.
