As the title says, and the next please. I know its a StuG!!!

Built this and primed a year or two back.

So used this for first time

Only cost £10, contains 4 bottles, dark shadow, panzer grey, then two bottles, a shade lighter than panzer grey and another bottle lighter again!

So two layers of panzer grey then another bash at modulation

Not sure if its ok??? So would appreciate good or bad feedback

Thanks all

Bob

Personally, not too sure about the light bit in the middle of each panel? (but then, I'm only a beginner!)

Superstructure looks good Bob. I think the horizontal fender/wings/whateverthiercalled over the tracks could do with a little modulation as well though.

Hi Gerry, the idea is to show where sunlight etc has faded the panels, especially roof, engine hatches, still playing around with modulation ??

Hi Tim

Can see what you mean, i am going to use oils on the fenders to hopefully show dust build up, StuG being used in the early stages of the invasion of Russia, summer 1941

Thanks bob

Hi Bob,
I like where this is going, maybe as I like a bit of variation in the paint to add interest.

I think your highlights look pretty good and wouldn’t go anymore than that. If you doing a filter or a wash it will tone down any way :thumb2:

Bob, think it looks ok, certainly better that an all over grey or in my case a green. Now as Si says the washes or filters toning it down along with the weathering it will be perfect.

Your modulation skills have come on leaps and bounds Bob. A fantastic base to get the oils working on. Keep it comin my friend. Two completed builds in one year?? Surely not! ;) :smiling3::cool::thumb2:

Now that does remind me of someone??

Superb Pete!!

Really impressed with my new Iwata trigger airbrush, lovely to use, dropped the pressure down to about 8 or so psi and used the needle restrictor at the rear of the brush. No pain in wrist or fingers, yippee!!

Bob

I'll freely admit that as a newbie I scuttled off to youtube to get the lowdown on paint modulation. What I saw seemed to be mostly about using it as a tool to emphasize angle changes between panels, "shading" if you like. It also seems to be used (as you have) to give a bit of a 3D feel to flat areas of a vehicle.
I think it looks good, I just wonder whether if as a shading method it's a bit redundant on an already 3D object ? The right lighting will give the same effect.

I certainly used to something similar to what you have (though in reverse, light round the edges, dark in the middle) when I was a modeller the first time round and felt it enhanced what I built.

To me, as a designer/artist in a former life, shading is used to make 2D work come to life.

Don't get me wrong, much like the "chipping" thing I know it's a bit Marmite. I'm not sure about it but would be glad to let it grow on me. Anything to make our little creations look full size.

Well, you did ask....

/Love your work though !

Hi Bob
What you have done is fine as a starting point. If the initial colour variation is too restrained then it disappears with filters, washes, oil work, weathering etc. It's much easier to tone down than bring up. You can always mist over a very dilute coat of either the darker or lighter grey to reduce the contrast. Glad the new airbrush is to your liking.

Hi Jim

Many thanks Jim, would recommend the airbrush!

Firstly Bob so much respect for pulling out the cupboard queen wish I could I do bring out the odd one but they don't like the sun light and scream to be put back in the peace and darkness that is thrown up the back of the cupboard . Secondly great paint job (great paints)the modulation looks fine as Si says a filter coat will just bring it together ,the last few models I've stopped the obvious modulation and just worked from darkest tone to lightest just doing as I see it. As for it looking real I don't feel its supposed to but it makes the whole thing look real does that make sense pleasing to the person viewing it. Sorry Bob that subject needs a diffrent thread any way amazing so far looking forward to the next installment . Dave

Morning Bob

Very nice modulation, how did you thin the Mr Hobby?

I have the Dunkelgelb set and haven't used them before, so I got their own thinner just in case.

Looks like your user friendly AB is working just fine, so no excuses for not getting the paint on your queue of projects,

Except the -2C in the garage!

Enjoy the weathering and oils.

Regards

Must admit that the more I look at it, the more I'm coming round to the overall finish (don't get me wrong - I love the work, it's just that I'm still getting used to some of the techniques used to get results)

That looks good Bob.......I think Si nailed it about it toning down with filters and/or a wash.....personally, I'd leave it as is......nice effect to my eyes. Rick H.

Bob,
Once you start to add the washes (filters) with oils, this will tone down the colour as it looks now, then you will also add the weathering and at each stage the colours (modulations) will blend into each other. Great start.

Chris, plenty of time to get on land and follow the mighty StuG lol

Many thanks Dave, there's few more shelf queens to finish, all my fault lol, the Mr color and MRP paints I am finding great to use apart from the pong, very easy to thin Mr color !

great to hear from you Steve, well I hope!

I thinned using Mr Color self levelling at 1/1, but find these paints very forgiving when it comes to thinning, the trigger airbrush is excellent at low pressure as well as high, a good buy me thinks!

Might sell my Sparmax one with a 0.2 needle which I bought just to use for modulation? The heater in the garage sure helps if put on 30 mins before i venture into the fridge lol

Must admit that the more I look at it, the more I'm coming round to the overall finish (don't get me wrong - I love the work, it's just that I'm still getting used to some of the techniques used to get results)
Gerry, me too lol, just need to practice and then some more, I am no expert but ask and I will try to help you, learnt a lot on the great site !!

Modulation did cause me problems for a while until in college, we had a MAN tractor unit in dark blue in the training workshop, one day a year or two ago the cab was over and I could see the air deflector on the roof. The fading on it was terrible, the deflector was very pale blue, the roof slightly darker, In a flash I could see what the fuss was about

That looks good Bob.......I think Si nailed it about it toning down with filters and/or a wash.....personally, I'd leave it as is......nice effect to my eyes. Rick H.
Many thanks Rick !!!

Hi Mike

appreciated

Next is to do the light high lights on hinges ect., following Steve's advice will do as a wash and with a burhs

thanks all bob

Thanks for the info Bob,

I'll try mine once this weird weather finally settles and I can get into the garage, hopefully next week!

I did manage to get a bottle of the self levelling thinner, though its hard to get now like Mr surfacer 1500?

Must all be on a boat/ship in the Suez canal!

Have fun with the weathering and oils.

Regards

Steve H
