I needed some Revell paints and found this on ebay. What's the idea of saying the RRP on these paints is £7.99? That's surely not right.

Got the same thing from airbrushsupplyonline for £2.20 inc. p&p.

I don't know what is funnier, that he is asking that sky high price, or that someone has actually bought one!

I wasn't so much looking at the sale price as the fact that he's giving such a ludicrous RRP. Surely the manufacturers have a say in that. I know if I worked for Revell, I'd be unhappy with it!

I always ignore RRPs. They are a scam used to make you think that you are getting a bargain.

I recently saw a knife set in a well known and reputable department store purporting to have 60% off the RRP. They were selling for just slightly more than I could get them from the manufacturer's own outlet.

Marking misleading RRPs on items to make them appear a better bargain than they are is not just irritating for the consumer, it's illegal. You might want to point that out to the seller, I did to the aforementioned department store.

Our posts crossed there Steve. I didn't know it was illegal to misquote the RRP.

Its similar to the people on e-bay who occasionally list things at ridiculous prices just on the off chance an unwiitting punter buys it. An example , I saw an airbrush on buy it now for £29 , the seller also had some on auction at various prices (all under £29.) BUT on looking at his other listings he had more airbrushes at £29 , but a few at £250. It was the SAME airbrush ,and only a chinese cheapie so worth probably no more than £20 but he must have been hoping someone might buy it not knowing they were being majorly ripped off. He wasnt doing anything illegal , just very immoral!!

It's illegal to mislead the consumer and quoting a ridiculous RRP, usually in reference to a seemingly fantastic bargain price, is misleading. Didn't TKMax get done for it ?

Incidentally I think a trader can quote any price he likes as long as he's not attempting to mislead.

I'm also not sure that RRPs actually exist anymore, as in a price recommended by a producer or manufacturer to the retailer.

I'd qualify that by pointing out that I'm not nor have I ever been a lawyer :)

Oh well, illegal or not, I think I'd take a very dim view of it if I represented Revell. Folks could see this and get the idea that their products are ridiculously expensive and stop looking. Tony's got a point though. I wonder how many folks get caught out by seeming bargains like this?

Enough for a lot of retailers to keep doing it.

Well we're good here. The use of RRP is forbidden in Denmark.

The question is who is the mug. The guy that tries to sell at indecent prices, or the punter that pays it.

We have a saying here translates to some thing like; If it goes, it goes. Sort of If I can get away with it why not ....

People are suckers for a bargain and retailers know it. They will use an inflated and misleading RRP to give the impression that they are offering a huge discount.......a bargain to you or me.

Don't fall for it folks, do a bit of research as I did for those knives which SWMBO (who definitely isn't stupid) nearly bought because they were a 'bargain'.

That's ebay for you, for some reason people think they are getting a bargain because it's on ebay, everything I sell on there is at a much higher price than my website due to their fees.

The thing which I think people miss is not matter if you are buying from ebay, amazon or any other website is that you are covered by the distance selling act, so paying more is just silly :)

I have regularly seen books going on eBay for a higher price than they could be bought on Amazon, just a couple more clicks away. Are people really that ill informed, or lacking so much street cred that they can be so easily misled? I think some certainly are.
