Hi all my daughter in law is a physio and phoned pam today and had a long conversation with her, she knows the layout of our house very well and is going to organise what she thinks we need. Thanks so much for all the kind advice and suggestions, so hopefully things will get easier, now I really must get back to the ironing hoovering and cooking dinner (never knew how indispensable pam is, here's hoping for and extra speedy recovery)

Well I'm pee'd off with hospital gp agrees she should have stayed in, but that she seems stable enough now, what I'm really pee'd off with (my daughter in law is a Physio) we should have been given things like a bit you put on the loo to make it easier for Pam to get on and off the loo also the couch, they should have assessed our house for her to get around, for instance (a new experience for me) I had to shower Pam this morning, with a broken back an standing in the shower, she was being very brave but it hurt her a lot ( becky my daughter in law says we should have been given a chair which sits in the bath so she can sit down also a non slip matt)  I thought I had a great idea and would use one of the plastic chairs from the garden but it won't sit stably in the bath, I'm really quite cross. I'm now going to make a seat which fits over the top of the bath out of an old kitchen work top.

I was pee'd off as well concerning my wife's severe sciatica (my post above). The GP did not refer her to any place offering assistance devices and we struggled on . After a week the severe pain had not subsided and I went straight to the Hospital, explained the situation very er... clearly and asked for some help. A few minutes a very nice physio came with a wheeled zimmer frame which my wife found a huge relief. This should have been provided within a couple of hours of leaving the doctor's surgery. And we live in a part of the country which has a better NHS service than the average, and with a hospital on the doorstep. The answer is not to be meek but to demand (politely of course - its not the fault of the front line people.


My daughter lives in Germany with her family and from what she has told me over the years, they are much more attentive, immediately rallying round the patient and providing medical help whatever the problem. My wife was not offered physiotherapy and we paid for it ourselves. It was very effective.

Sounds like your family is sorting it Ken. I have had to get my own stuff like bath aids and splints. But, the hospital should have done more...no wonder you're angry mate.

I don't understand how women do it, after a days work then doing all the house work, I've been doing it for 3 days and I'm knackered, I have a new appreciation of just how much Pam does.


(I manage to sneak up 3 or 4 times a day to check on her ) but even so, I take my hat off to her.

When my wife had her hugely painful sciatica last year, lasting for 6 weeks before it improved, I had to do a very great deal more than I normally did, and I still do more than before the attack. There are many things I am able to do (competence-wise), and the rule I adopted last year was "if there is something needing to be done at any time and I am able to do it, I do it. More vaccing the carpets, filling and emptying the dishwasher, setting tables and clearing up, heaving shopping bags into the house (they aren't half heavy), cleaning toilets and basins, etc. etc. in addition to the usual grass cutting and  DIY which is my expertise. (One thing I am not allows to do is put things away. Its too complicated for my brain.) Women are hard done by, no doubt about that.


Now I'm off to polish my halo (it is quite a small one).

I was looking at our hols pics and it dawned on me just how quickly things can change, this is Pam 48 hrs before 

She won't let me take a pic now but she went from the vibrant funny person you see there to laying on her back unable to do anything with out a lot of pain in 48 hrs, live life in the now, you don't know what's round the corner.

Just take your time Ken, house work is the last thing on your mind. Look after yourself and your missus, hopefully she will be up and about soon.

Hi all well after just a year she has done a park run and continues to amaze me. She has after 15 yrs of pestering her finally agreed to marry me, I'm like a dog with three tails or an elephant who's discovered he's stood on a mouse, we're now looking at dates and venues.
